I just removed your IUD! Without your consent! And I’m not going to put another one in! Because I’m pro-life! You got a problem with that, slut?

A woman in Albuquerque, N.M., went to a local health clinic to have the long string of her IUD shortened. No big deal—all it takes is a simple snip. The nurse prodded her with a speculum and then, inexplicably, began pulling on the IUD, causing her sudden, intense pain. Then the nurse said one thing you never want someone to say when they have their hand in your vagina: “Uh-oh!” …

Surely, the patient must have been terrified—but then the nurse offered an explanation: “I accidentally pulled out your IUD. I gently tugged and out it came … I cut the string than went back and gently pulled and out it came. It must have not been in properly.” That might have been somewhat reassuring—oh well, accidents happen—only, the nurse continued to explain that “having the IUD come out was a good thing” and then offered, “I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don’t know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them.”

The nurse in question has a history—allegedly—of removing patient’s IUDs and refusing to replace them. The woman is suing. More at Salon.

  1. I would make it my sole purpose in life to make sure that “nurse” is never allowed to work in the medical field again.

    Disgusting.

  2. And that’s a nurse-bloody-practitioner. You know, the ones who are like half a doctor? That’s appalling, can they disbar nurses or take their licenses away or something? I hope the other people she did this to come forward. While they’re at it, they should fine the hell out of the medical staff who obviously noticed she was doing this but didn’t bother to do anything about it.

  3. To which I would have liked to respond: “I don’t know how you feel about my punching you in the fucking mouth right now, but I am for it.”

  4. Ah.

Urgutha, I think I want to make that my sole purpose in life.

It’s pretty effing terrifying getting those things placed. Mine hurt. Then having it ripped out? OUCH. Gah. Sue. sue. sue.

  5. Wow. The rage I feel about this right now is overwhelming. I would feel so violated had that laughable excuse for a nurse practitioner pulled that shit on me, that I would feel the need to violate HER somehow. I hope she gets the scrubs sued off her.

  6. Remind me never to go to New Mexico. That should result in the revocation of her license and criminal prosecution. The victim shouldn’t have to sue. I think I’ll reconsider visiting Taos this year.

  7. The victim should be sure to include in her lawsuit any right winger groups to which this predator belongs. That includes her church, where she more than likely receives constant reinforcement that her physical assaults on patients are OK.

Huge, crippling class-action lawsuit that forces the church to sell land, doctor to give up one of his vacation homes, nurse has to sell her eggs, etc.

  8. Well, I pulled out my own IUD by accident when the extra-long wires got tangled in my tampon. I was badly shaken by it, but it didn’t hurt. And the good people at Planned Parenthood gave me a new one right away (and clipped the wires shorter)! The nurse in this case deserves jail.

  9. The nurse continued: “Everyone in the office always laughs and tells me I pull these out on purpose because I am against them, but it’s not true, they accidentally come out when I tug.”
REALLY! They just kind of slip out. And it only really happens to you, none of the other nurses.
It’s sickening. These people claim to be for American values, but it’s so easy to see they’d love a Middle Eastern theocracy in over here, just a preacher in place of an Ayatolla.

  10. @11 when you are on your period is a good time to remove your IUD because your cervix is more soft at that time, although I imagine it varies by woman too, a great deal rests on what part of the cycle you are doing it in.

I assume this woman wasn’t on her period because most women try to avoid gyno-health related appointments when they are on their period.

While occasionally IUDs come loose on their own, the whole “they say I do this on purpose” comment is pretty damning.

After she loses her job she should go to jail for performing medical procedures on patients without their consent. And while she is in jail inmates should be encouraged to poke her cervix with a fork. Hopefully more of her other “accident” victims come forward.

  11. Hey, also since stupid people get a Darwin Award when they remove themselves from the gene pool, shouldn’t they also get a Darwin Award when they add a smarter person to the gene pool? That’s how the Darwin Awards work, right?

  12. Holy shit. That is insane. Those things hurt like a son of a bitch to get put in (at least, if you haven’t had kids), so it’s no small thing for that woman to get another one. I would be absolutely furious with that nurse… she deserves whatever she gets. I just hope she isn’t able to hide behind the “it’s an accident” excuse in court.

By the way, IUDs are no more a form of abortion than regular birth control pills. But, you know, facts and stuff.

  13. @23,

Even if she can get away with saying it was just an accident, she still might be liable for medical malpractice. It still wouldn’t be enough, especially since she belongs in jail.

  14. @26,

No, according to Bush’s new regs, she could refuse to put in an IUD, she could refuse to trim the strings, which is what she was supposed to do, but she can’t perform a medical procedure against a patient’s will.

  15. Oh holy fucking Christ. If some fucking cunt ever pulled my IUD out, y’all would see it on the news: “Jessica cuts a bitch and laughs.”

This awful, awful excuse for a “person” deserves jail and someone pulling HER IUD out.

  16. and where does she get off being so bloody ignant about what an iud actually DOES? jesus on a stick, this woman must have a screw loose to be saying all this crap even if she does believe it.

  17. @3-NPs are not really like “half doctors”. In many states, NPs practice with a lot of autonomy. Also, studies have shown the care they provide to have similar outcomes to doctors. So, just because this one NP did something awful, it’s no reason to insult all NPs.

  18. @30 – She’s not ignorant about what an IUD does. These people believe life begins at conception – therefore it follows that they believe the IUD is a form of abortion, because it prevents implantation of a fertilized egg.

Not defending, just saying. They don’t play by our definitions.

  19. @31 – I understand what NPs do, I just couldn’t really think of a good way to explain it besides half-doctor – ie, halfway between an RN and a doctor. No insult intended, I love NPs to death and wish they’d get them up in Canada.

  20. That shit HURTS too, and it’s not just a little cramp, it feels like your guts are being ripped apart. That bitch needs to be punished. Severely.

  21. Sigh. I’m here, in ABQ, NM. You know, we already have some of the shittiest healthcare in the states, and now this? Geez. Because my ovaries and vagina didn’t cause me enough pain already….

  22. women still use IUDs? Isn’t that like so 1970?

Full disclosure: I am totally clueless on today’s non-condom, non-pill contraception.

  23. @36: beyond the painful “getting it” and “getting it removed” parts, IUDs are pretty goddamn awesome for an extended period of time. Mirena can lessen periods and cramping, and lasts for up to 6 years. The copper one lasts for up to 10. Even paying out-of-pocket for one is incredibly cost-effective.

  24. @32 Copper IUDs prevent fertilization by creating a hostile environment for sperm, Hormonal IUDs prevent ovulation. Its scary that a practicing NP dosent care to learn how the contraception works because of her ideology.

  25. @36. Ditto what Jessica said. I have a copper one, and it is amazing. 10 years of birth control that I don’t ever have to think about, that insurance covered completely (vs. a copay every month or every 3 months for the pill), and that is non-hormonal.

Plus, as an added bonus, no baby killing!! (Like 38 said, the copper ones prevent fertilization).

  26. Sick, sick, sick!

That bitch needs to never practice medicine again! I admire the restraint of her patient and hope all goes well for her.

  27. That shit hurts. Like seriously that would make me cry for hours to have somebody do that. I mean, just pulling it out without telling me, so I freak out and tense up… Just fucking ow.

Secondly, I hope that bitch gets fired without any sort of severance package. It’s not fucking abortion, and I don’t see how anyone could consider it otherwise.

  28. Jesus, @ 45, thanks for the Star Wars psychobabble. Anger unchecked can lead to bad things, but the anger I feel about this event is in no way ill-placed. This is righteous rage.

  29. Every time I read about this, I get enraged all over again. How can this woman be so willfully stupid and evil? You think Christ wants you to force women to stop using birth control?

  30. Awful as it may seem, this is really all the more reason to get an IUD. Clearly its outrageous and not a protected right of doctors to interfere with your IUD. However they do have a protected right to interfere if your birth control comes in pill form.
