According to BikePortland, there will be a large contingent of cyclists at today’s rally for scandal-plagued Portland mayor Sam Adams, “the most pro-bike mayor we’ve had in Portland.”

  1. Our mayor lies and lies and lies all the time about his commitment to cycling and other green initiatives. That’s actually relevant to his job, and nobodies asking him to resign over that sort of mendacity.
Lie all thet time about stuff that matters and it’s just politics. Lie once about sex when it’s nobodies damned business and it’s cardinal sin.
Americans deserve the wretched government they generally have.

  2. Isn’t the rally today rather than tomorrow? I would hate to have to follow Slog posts about it on my own time tomorrow rather than my boss’s time today. Waah!

  3. If an 18-maybe-17 year old wrote Dan Savage saying that he was being told by his 40-something lover he should keep quiet about their relationship, and that the 40 something was sorta his boss, I have a feeling Dan would say DTMFA. The guy is a dirtbag.

I’m glad he’s pro-cycling. But he’s a pro-cycling dirtbag, and I would be ashamed to have him in office if I were a proud Portlander. If Nichols was banging an 18 year old intern and telling her to lie about it, I would want him to go too.

And honestly, the one openly gay mayor of a major city in the US should not be seen as a dirtbag who is above the rules of dirtbaggery applied to all other politicians. It’s not what we need right now.

  4. keshmeshi, is being mayor of Portland just a job? Like he needs it to put food on his family and stay off the unemployment rolls? Or is being mayor a public honor that requires a person of at least, well, average, if not above average, virtue?

  5. elenchos-

Sorry to do this to you buddy, but in reference to John Edwards, you said:

The state has no need to know about or interfere with private morality. And the electorate has no need either.

I only kept the thread because in it Fnarf eviscerated me for suggesting that morality and leadership are related.

I don’t know if you and he was right then, or I was right then and you’re right now. I know that I don’t really care who the Mayor of Portland did what to, or when. Because I’m not in Portland, and no crimes were committed. I feel like Dan has been in protest mode since Prop 8 and is just casting around for things to be pissed off about right now.

  6. Oh, Sven, I don’t think he should resign or be fired for this. My position is that he is hanging by a thread and may continue to hang by that thread so long as there are no more bones about to fall out of his closet and he doesn’t keep lying.

For me the main thing is that those rushing to defend him are embarrassing themselves. The man behaved badly and shouldn’t be defended for it. Do you know there are people saying Dan Savage is the gay Al Sharpton, perpetually offended and always defending the indefensible based on identity alone? It’s horrible; Savage is nothing like Sharpton. Nothing. At all. They have not one thing in common.

Definitely this isn’t a state issue. It’s between Adams and the good people of Port-Land or whatever the call it down South there.

Oh, hey did you know that Adams himself is the one who made up the false claim that Breedlove worked for him, pretending to be a “mentor” as cover? Hilarious.

  7. I would like to mentor Christina Aguilera and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Simultaneously, if possible. I feel that I have a lot to offer as a mentor.
