Lordy, you can spend years talking about your affection for Golden Retrievers, but you mention that a matted, one-eyed dog at the pound is a mangy beast and the Golden Retriever Society of America is up your ass about it. For the record, I’m all smitten with Seattle’s trend of six-story residential development. It’s swell. I’ve had my proverbial tongue circling the proverbial butthole of six-story residential development on Slog for years. I’ve even defended some of the worst of it. These projects can’t have every fine detail we want and remain affordable—granite ain’t cheap and slavery is gauche. But sometimes it’s needlessly hideous when something appealing could be built for the same price. And other times I write posts that are a liiiittle absurd—like ones that compare sketches of buildings to “unripe starfruit.”

  1. um, no, it’s because you’re totally arrogant dick who is presumptuous enough to critique architecture with the insights and vocabulary of a completely amateur fool with zero credibility on the topic.

and Dan pulling out an article three years old with one lousy sentence about “we hope the mayor does this..” and calls that A FIGHT is equally pathetic.

stick to stuff you know. like pictures of things named Dick.. that’s what people read the Stranger for anyway.

leave architecture alone, please. for the love of God.

  2. @3 yeah they should stick to theater criticism like Christopher Frizelle’s wonderful review of the people and bars in Issaquah, I mean, of whatever play he saw there.

  3. @1, ouch. I appreciate what Dom’s trying to do. I don’t think anyone wants to ensconce discussions of architecture in an ivory tower (or in the UW’s case that awful modern concrete slabby thing), so let us provincials gawk. That said, the first one looked alright and posts hating on 6story blob buildings are getting played out.

Still, public conversations about architecture can only help to enrich our public space–and right now Dom on Slog is the only game in town. He is about the only writer in Seattle that discusses the new buildings in any systematic, ambitious way. Perhaps, like Superman, FDR and Obama, we ask too much from you because your are the only one.

  4. I don’t have super passionate feelings about architecture like all you boar experts, but I like seeing the different buildings and reading Dominic’s take on them. Keep it up, plz!

  5. Really, Really – the tongue metaphor seems rather, mmm..
    a. digusting
    b. entirely original but do I want to think about this?
    c. wholly out of proportion Batman!

  6. How many times do you look around your own neighborhood (let alone one you don’t visit regularly) and wonder, “How’d that piece of shit get built?” Or wonder “Who got paid off?” The answer is in the permitting process, and nobody’s watching that…except Dominic.

  7. @10 Actually a lot of people are watching the permitting process and trying to do something, but then are either ridiculed by this rag’s staff and others as NIMBYs, or we end up beating our head against the wall that is the we’ll-let-em-build-turds-as-long-as-they’re-building-something mayor and council. That’s how those pieces of shit get built.

20 years from now we’ll look back in horror at the crap that we took on this city…

  8. Capitol Hill (and.to a lesser extent other neighborhoods) have an abundance of these concrete slab construction apartment buildings which were mostly thrown up for the ’62 Worlds Fair. They are f’ugly and are rather affordable since they don’t hold their value well. A lot of these new buildings are also f’ugly and won’t hold their value well – probably in 15 years they will be this neighborhood’s supply of lower priced rentals. Whle I’d rather see wonderful buildings getting designed and built, I take some comfort in watching the future supply of relativley affordable apts. being created.

  9. keep it up.

what qualifications does it take to see a sketch of a building and decide if you like how it looks or not? if dom didn’t post this, i’d not have seen those buildings, and i would take less an interest in the architecture of my community. i appreciate your work.

    and i agree completely.

we all have seen six story buildings we like, and those we don’t. contrary to what some posters speculate, we don’t require marble columns to like a project. even ikea makes some decent looking furniture.

  10. @12:

I’ll be surprised if some of these “let’s slap ’em up as quickly and cheaply as possible” habicondos are still standing in 20 years. Either the next 7.0 will bring them down, or else a property owner with much better taste will knock them down.

At least, so one can hope…

  11. keep up the architecture/city planning posts and don’t listen to the dumbfuck naysayers/property developer lackeys who think any NEW building is magically delicious regardless of its suitablility for the neighborhood…

  12. @17: They may still stand in 20, but not in 50 or 60. The only consolation is that when it comes time to level the mothers, no one’s going to bat an eye.
