On Thursday, High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron was photographed in London with visibly waxy ears.
On Saturday, Efron was photographed in Los Angeles being pelted with Q-tips. (Photo from the UK Sun, which, uh, also has video.)
Yesterday, I learned that British people call cotton ear swabs “ear buds.”
What’s weirdest?

I’m more concerned about the visibly greasy hair in that earwax photo.
I love that photo with the ear”buds” flying through the air… it’s rather lovely
I don’t know about us calling them ‘Ear Buds’, I’m more used to ‘Cotton Buds’. But the US does use brand names for way more stuff than the Brits do. Except for ‘Hoover’. My fiance pointed that once out with a smirk on her face after I said I was going to get my hoover on…
Actually, my Step-Grandmother was the Mayor of Malmesbury in England, where the Dyson factory is. She cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony and announced how happy she was to open this marvellous Hoover Factory. Frank Dyson was not amused.
Can there be a fourth option in the poll called “Ummmm you should not be putting q-tips in your earholes!!” Nothing smaller than your elbow, people.
5 – For real. You’re just pushing the wax further into the ear canal.
Also, everyone involved in this incident should be smacked.
You should add option number 4: The weird thing is that a fat, old, ugly douchebag like David Schmader is posting his penchant for pedophilia online. Lose some weight, bitch. Or at least get better looking.
@5, I’d rather risk hearing loss than feel a glob of earwax just sitting there for all eternity. Vanity? Perhaps. But dirty ears are nasty. Besides, you don’t even have to stick the Q-tip IN the ear canal to get at wax like that kid’s.
Bleargh.
you’re hating on Schmader? that’s sad.
I find it utterly bizarre that (1) somebody looked closely enough at his ear holes to notice the wax, and (2) anybody cared.
@8, you are what’s wrong with America.
@11, says somebody posting as Dr. Drew. 🙂 But if I’m what’s wrong with America, then I think we’ll all be just fine.
@10, I couldn’t agree more.
What does it say about our celebrity obsessed culture when people seriously care enough about Zac Efron’s ear wax to throw “ear buds” at him? Bizarre is right!!
Fuck, people, there’s a depression on. Go volunteer at a soup kitchen or something.
@8, all you need to do is let soapy water rest in your ear when you shower.
@5, I use paper clips myself.
BTW, who the fuck is Zac Efron?
such classy journalism
Original name for Q-tips was Baby Gays. Which is down right adorable.
@14, that’s good to get it loosened, but then what? It doesn’t just jump out of the ear, and you can only get so much of the gunk with the bath towel.
For what it’s worth, I have my ears checked annually… and my doctor knows about my compulsion to clean my ears. As long as I do it right (don’t push the gunk inward, don’t brush your teeth at the same time, be gentle, etc.), it will all be just fine. I’ll still have my hearing and I won’t have nasty ears: win win win.
My ears get washed out when I take a shower. Sometimes I’ll have that weird feeling of a little water left in my ear afterwards, but I’ve never had a substantial buildup of earwax.
4. The popularity of Zac Efron
I’ve seen the pictures…it was bad; visible from a distance grungy ears…
as my gammy would say, “what are you tryin’ to do, grow taters in there?”
Disgusting!
So, if Q-tips are bad, what is the preferred method of ear hygiene? First person to say “ear candling” gets punched in the dreamcatcher.
Ear candles are for choads. God gave you pinky fingers for a reason.
You’re ALL idiots. Bobby pins get job the done, and done right.
This was a paparazzi prank. even fans aren’t going to sink that low. some jerk trying to get a photo with the qtips.
