In Seattle-area news: University bridge is closed. Or open. Or closed. It depends on whether you were planning to go over the bridge or under it. This just in from SDOT:
With extreme temperatures causing an expansion of its steel and concrete components, the University Bridge will remain in the closed position to prevent damage from an opening. While the bridge is available for motor vehicle traffic, it will not be opened for marine traffic through the night. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will leave the bridge in a closed position overnight to prevent any structural damage and adverse impacts to emergency response.
I was out of town during the WTO demonstrations too. I always miss the fun stuff.

I’m going to weather my 107 degrees with some whiskey and ice, and try not to envy your 73 degrees and air-conditioned hotel room. Lucky guy.

I don’t quite know how to read this story. On one level, I get that we’ve underfunded infrastructure projects for far too long. But, are our bridges really that brittle that a few degrees warmer temperature are threatening them? Or, is SDOT playing that card to underscore that we’ve neglected funding for infrastructure? Alas, who can know?
@10 I guess not, although most seem to have some connection to the city. Me, I was born in Seattle, but haven’t lived there for many years, but still have many connections to the area.

@9, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I live around the corner from that place, and WeHo simply isn’t the epicentre of a “drugged out club scene.” Sure, it’s the gay ghetto, with lots of gay bars, but clubs are few and far between, and LA’s generally is no more druggy than any other major city, at least that I’ve visited.
But, of course, no one ever lost votes for ragging on LA.
It may be cool and in the 70s, but it’s gloomy and grey. Sort of like Seattle is all the time;-). Thank gods the clouds burn off by mid morning. Say what you like about LA, 350 days of sun a year isn’t a bad thing. But maybe I say that having lived 18 years in Canada and 5 in England.
