  1. OK, I agree with you – I’m sick of those people too. But I have to agree with them to the extent that they disagree with the statement that abortion is a right. A necessary evil sometimes, yes, but I’m afraid it’s not a right.

  2. @2: Don’t you believe that the right to control your own body is a basic right? The only potential reason a woman wouldn’t have the right to eat RU-486 (or what have you) would be if the rights of another person came into conflict with that right. Since a newly-fertilized zygote does not meet any reasonable test of personhood, the woman playing host to it is perfectly within her rights to exert control over her own bodily processes.

There are those who believe, absent any evidence or strong supporting arguments, that an egg becomes a full-fledged person at the moment of conception. But for those who don’t hold this belief, abortion most certainly should be considered a right.

  3. I don’t think the abortion question is even that relevant. My understanding is that this is an issue about blocking effective sexual education in parts of the world where access to contraception is significantly more limited than it is here.

The most absurd thing about all of this is that ultimately, many of these programs would effectively promote abstinence merely out of necessity. In a reasonable world, any educational program that effectively increases the number of people remaining abstinent until marriage and faithful afterward would be celebrated by Conservatives.

But we don’t live in a reasonable world. In this world, their immature queasiness about all topics sexual takes over, and it appears they appear to rather cut off their noses to spite their face, or so to speak. Great job guys. Real smooth.

  4. @2

Oh it is a Right, all right. But it isn’t the act of getting an aborion that is a right- it is the CHOICE of whether or not a woman wants to get an abortion that is a right. The Right To Choose (what a woman does with HER body.) A very slight difference- but an important distinction to make. And THAT is what these idiots want to strip women of. And I’m sorry, but agreeing with them on that or any level is disgusting.

  5. What’s really sad about the whole thing is that many sex educators themselves know that teaching abstinence-only education is harmful, but they can’t do anything about it, or they would lose their jobs. It just disgusts me how study after study for the last 30 years or more have shown that teaching safe sex as opposed to no sex is drastically more effective in preventing diseases and pregnancy. Yet the governments just keep funding the broken programs. The Puritans need to go find themselves a little island where they can pretend that teenagers don’t have hormones.
