Ten years ago today Nicholas White was maybe bored too, so he went for a cigarette and got trapped in an elevator for 41 hours.

  1. I remember seeing this awhile back- I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be stuck there for nearly two whole days… and to add insult to injury, he probably ran out of smokes somewhere in that time, so he was fiending for a smoke along with the crippling claustrophobia, dehydration and hunger.

  2. @4,

At a certain point, he decided to open the doors. He pried them apart and held them open with his foot. He was presented with a cinder-block wall on which, perfectly centered, were scrawled three “13”s—one in chalk, one in red paint, one in black. It was a dispiriting sight. He concluded that he must be on the thirteenth floor, and that, this being an express elevator, there was no egress from the shaft anywhere for many stories up or down.

  3. Uh, that sucks and all, but the guy sued for TWENTY FIVE MILLION DOLLARS and lost his job because he thought returning to work would be disadvantageous to the litigation.

  4. It’s fitting that this happened the same year Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, the Matrix, Office Space, Donnie Darko, and the Truman Show were made.

  5. I wonder if he knew the video was there…might explain why he didn’t decide to jack off. Nothing else to do for 41 fucking hours.

  6. #11, “The lawsuit he filed, for twenty-five million dollars, against the building’s management and the elevator-maintenance company, took four years. They settled for an amount that White is not allowed to disclose, but he will not contest that it was a low number, hardly six figures. “
“White no longer had his job, which he’d held for fifteen years, and lost all contact with his former colleagues. He lost his apartment, spent all his money, and searched, mostly in vain, for paying work. He is currently unemployed.”
