As a designer, this is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. I want all of you to go to Typography for Lawyers and study it.
Sooner or later you will need to submit text for something—your resume/cover letter, the menu for your restaurant, the sign on your door, a grant proposal, that ad you’re running in the Stranger—and then you (yes, even YOU) will need to understand how to make typography work for you.
Please help the sanity of designers and type-nerds everywhere.
And don’t use Comic Sans.
Kinda curious about the Stranger’s decision to use sans-serif font in Slog. In the news articles etc you guys use a serif font. But Slog gets the sans treatment.
What went into that decision? I’m in the “serifs make things easier to read” crowd. Is it bc Slog posts are often short and broken up by links, pics and ads? Just curious.
I can see how the serifs might chop things up a bit in Slog, but on the other hand some Slog posts are rather long and might benefit from some character elaboration.

For the sake of polling, I’m a double space hater. Hate em. Oh god how I hate em.
I learned to type on a typewriter, and learned that the only reason to double space was that the type wasn’t kerned. In a word processor with kerned type, there’s absolutely no freakin reason to do that. It’s redundant. What’s the period for?
@50: On the other hand, I have here an Eshbach’s Handbook of Engineering Fundamentals, Third Edition, which was printed in 1974, and it still uses the double space throughout the text. (The first edition was printed in 1936.)
sans serif fonts work best (i.e., easier for the eyes to read) on computer screens; ariel’s the go-to font for electronic documents. it has something to do with the illumination from the computer screen.
serif fonts, on the other hand, work best in hardcopy.
