He’s got ties to Pakistan:

NEW YORK — The search to find out who planted a car bomb that fizzled out in crowded Times Square took an international turn Monday as law enforcement officials said they were seeking a potential suspect who had recently traveled to Pakistan and had used cash to buy the SUV from a Connecticut man.
Authorities identified the buyer of the SUV used in the botched bombing after interviewing the registered owner of the vehicle. One of the officials told The Associated Press that the potential suspect is a man of Pakistani descent who recently traveled to Pakistan.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is at a sensitive stage.

Officials had initially thought the job was likely domestic due to the amateurism, even though the Pakistani Taliban claimed reponsibility. This doesn’t say much for authorities’ opinion of domestic terrorists, nor their assessment skills. The shortcomings of the bomber are already well documented.

UPDATE: His name is Faisal Shahzad: “Faisal is a Connecticut resident and a naturalized citizen. He recently returned from several months in Pakistan.”

  1. Aw man, what color are the Pakistani War ribbons gonna be? Are they going to be magnets? Or maybe tasteful ties?

  2. Let’s get this out of the way:
    -“Told you so”
    -“Now who’s profiling”
-“I knew it was a muslim”
-“Black people commit most of the crime in this country, AND THE WORLD”
-“Haha, I knew more than Slog by not knowing anything”
-“I told you we should wait for the news to come out”
-“Teabaggers are going to go crazy”
    -“Jews did it”
    -“This is transphobic, somehow.”
-“I want to post the name of this guy up by the Fremont Bridge.”
    -“SHUT UP, WILL”
    -“SOUTH PARK!! I KNEW IT!!”

  3. One of the officials told The Associated Press that the potential suspect is a man of Pakistani descent who recently traveled to Pakistan.

Too bad. This is going to be so disappointing to my fellow lefties who wet their pants in excitement thinking it was an over-40 white male Tea Partier. Of course, they can always hope (or claim) that he’s a former Pakistani recruited by the Tea Party.

  4. Like I said, at the last white guys in their 40s meeting, we all voted unanimously against bombing and in favor of sticking with our standard, tried-and-true modes of oppression.

Also, by a narrow vote, golf remains our official sport, although support for hockey is growing.

  5. Officials had initially thought the job was likely domestic due to the amateurism, even though the Pakistani Taliban claimed reponsibility.

That seems like a rather odd conclusion, considering that attempts to set off bombs on airliners by Richard Reid and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab seemed pretty amateurish.

  6. “Alleged Times Square Bombing Failure Identified” ? WTF does that headline mean, Grant? I know if I squint my eyes and turn my dyslexia on I get the general idea, but damn. Try “Alleged Failed Times Square Bomber Identified” or something that doesn’t force me to reread it 3 times, bitte.

  7. If you’re going to change your blog post from saying he’s Pakistani to saying he’s got ties to Pakistan you might as well go ahead and change the rest of the content you’re reporting to reflect that Connecticut native Shahzad Faisal actually is a domestic terrorist.

When you guys rush to hit the send button before you’ve got the whole story, don’t you usually show your edits by leaving the previous content with strikethroughs or are there special rules for how you get to do it?

  8. @5: You forgot: “he was a recently excommunicated Catholic priest — in a brilliant disguise, of course”

  9. ft. hood shooter, jewish federation shooter, times sq. bomber. what in the world could be setting these guys off?

  10. @14: testosterone.

IOW, the anger’s there regardless, but the testosterone is the vehicle to push it over edge. Testosterone in of itself is fine.

What’s probably more worrisome is all the anger which cannot be seen nor is manifest by acts of violent aggression. What lurks below tends to be a bit scarier and more wont to fuel fury on a broader basis.

    “ties…”

America hating Liberals will try to paint this as domestic terrorism.

    This man was a Pakastani.
    Born in Pakistan.
Just came back from several months in Pakistan.
Where his wife and family live.
    Part of the Pakistan Taliban.

  12. Liberals don’t want to face the fact that Obama’s secret illegal civilian-killing war in Pakistan is creating a backlash that will reach us.

  13. I wonder who initially proposed attacking Pakistan? And who installed the military commanders advocating for it? The ones leading the charge? Telling Obama they can’t leave or there will be dire consequences and yadda yadda?

Must have been George W. Obama.

I wonder who launched more drone attacks on Pakistan and killed more civilians in 12 months that Bush did in 8 YEARS?

    Obama must really be impressionable…..

  15. @20: Well gee, you whine about wanting to go back to GOP control and then blubber about civilian death tolls when we start reporting ALL of them instead of a small number. What is it? If you wanted to keep on with the GOP party line of “get our enemies first” you have to accept consequences.

And note how Bush repeatedly stated we were not at war in Pakistan, giving conciliatory handjobs to Musharraf while everyone not in the GOP denial zone kept saying we were bombing the hell out of them. If you were to listen to Bush, we didn’t attack Pakistan more than once or twice in eight years.

We didn’t kill more in 12 months under Obama, we admitted we killed more. There’s a difference.

  16. Look at your average Muslim male on this country:

    1. You’re 18 and horny as hell.
    2. You would love to screw a Muslim girl but…..well, you can’t.
    3. You’d love to screw the blond cheerleader but she won’t touch you.
    4. You want to screw the East Asian girl, but she’ll only screw Asian, white and black guys (if she’s Vietnamese).
    5. You can’t bring yourself to screw a black girl because….well, you’re a Muslim male and think you’re better than that.
    6. You could try and screw a little boy but you’ve watched NBC’s “To Catch a Predator” series and already noticed how many South Asian men they catch.
    7. You’d screw the nearest sheep but you live in the US not the mountains of Pakistan.
    8. Oh fuck it, you hate America, everything you saw watching ‘Baywatch’ on Star TV in Karachi is a lie, everyone’s getting laid in America BUT you, let’s go blow something up.

So how do we end terrorism? Make sure young Muslim men can get laid.
