Implied Violence, 2008’s Genius Award winners in theater, recently finished performing their “most ambitious project to date, “The Dorothy K,” at the Donau Festival in Austria. They’re back in Seattle now, but their shipping container is not—it is still trapped overseas because they currently don’t have the money to bring it back (blame the volcano).

All their props and sets are inside that container, and they desperately need them for upcoming local projects. They say:

We are preparing two large-scale performance installations at The Frye Art Museum this summer and fall, as well as our first museum exhibition. We must have our container sent back to us in order to present our work in our home, and in order to do that we need your help.

They have set up a fundraising page here, so you can help them bring their art back to Seattle. In exchange for your donation, you get some art of your own. Examples: $5 gets you a personalized, artist-made postcard, $25 gets you a DVD of past performances, $100 gets you get a hand-made sculpture by Casey Curran—you can see the list of everything, and donate to their cause, here.

  1. Hey Stranger, why don’t YOU just pay for it seeing as they’re your lap dog?

Or hay maybe some other people can step in to slap together some completely and utterly random shit and act completely and utterly random. PROFIT.

  2. I think there might be some folks in the Gulf area or Haiti or I don’t know ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD where people are starving or need clean drinking water that may need it just a tad more.

  3. So let me get this right. Robert Wilson, Herbert Blau, Alanna Heiss, The Stranger, Andrzej Wirth,Guillermo Gomez-Pena, The Byrd Hoffman Foundation, Hermes Phettberg, Fritz Ostermayer, The Frye Art Museum, NWFF, and on and on…think that I.V.’s work is interesting, compelling, ambitious, blah, blah, blah.

BUT they don’t know shit. 1 & 2. You two make some really interesting points. Thank you.

Typically I would not enter this fray. But these comments are getting so tired, and after StillNon’s bizarre, callous, and really reaching way of dropping IV’s name in relation to an artist and friend who was badly injured and was struggling for his life.I am beginning to think he/she has an unhealthy obsession.

So let’s just end this discussion, get everything on the table.

Your right, fuck IV for flying 26 artists from Seattle to Vienna. Fuck them for producing over 25 pieces in Seattle (that have all been pay-what-you-can save NWNN). Fuck IV for making everything by hand, programs, posters, books, and costumes installations, whatever. Fuck IV for making work outside of Seattle, Fuck IV for making work in Seattle, Fuck IV for supporting projects and artists like The con(Temporary) Gallery, tEEth, Gallery 1412, Gallery 1830, Pat Graney (remember her project at 801 Aloha), The Pharmacy,Parenthetical Girls, The Dead Science, Free Sheep Foundation, just to name a few, fuck IV for its members getting buck-wild playing double dutch, fuck IV’s make due and mend attitude, fuck IV’s mission statements, manifestos, grueling rehearsal schedules, and the fact they think that they can skirt around traditional funding systems, but ESPECIALLY fuck me, and fuck you, fuck me, fuck you…

I hope that’s everything. That it’s out of everyone’s system now and that it’s OK if we ask for money to get a shipping container home so we can impose yet another project on your delicate and refined sensibilities. If you happen to have any expertise on how to get a 16′ shipping container back to Seattle I’d love to hear it and follow your advise to the letter.
Oh, and I DID ask The Stranger to pay for it! They told I’d have to suck a hundred dicks in a hundred minutes for the money. I’m just not as young as I used to be, and at my age it seems like an impossible task, so I and IV have had to try and figure something else out.

  4. And you wonder why Seattle can’t keep artists with any modicum of recognition from taking the first bus out of this sorry provincial nightmare.

  5. “taking the first bus out of this sorry provincial nightmare.”

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

  6. 13: since there is nothing new, talented, or unique about this shock jock troop, there will be another to spring up in its place as usual…. = we don’t care if you leave because you aren’t artists.

Make it sooner than later, kaythanks.

  7. Dear Stranger-

I have read drcm’s comment, and would just like to state here that I am considerably younger and more able than him to suck one hundred dicks in one hundred minutes. If that is what it should take, I leave this city Tuesday and am more than happy to leave any and all shame here as well.

I would also like to say in light of the list of negative and unproductive voices above this one, that I think Implied Violence makes beautiful and important work.

Lastly- Lovely Linda, who are you calling a yokel? Your fucking comment says “in” twice

  8. If I am to understand this correctly, I.V. didn’t plan for this expense beforehand and now expect others to pay for the container? Some fucking Geniuses. $30,000?! Bitch, please. Fuck I.V.

  9. Actually fuck it seems like it is exactly the same as how all theater companies dance companies, galleries, large and small operate. I mean PNB who also won a Genius Award had a $147,000 deficit at the time. It’s just that IV is small enough it could break them. Your problem should be with the rejection of traditional funding models. This seems par for the course.

  10. Implied Violence makes interesting work.Is it important work? If it is to you then help. If it isn’t then make you own damn work but stop bitching. It is easy to kick people when they are down, harder to step up and help. I am with pinko on this one!

  11. bigman, i owe you a smoke…

the level of idiocy on this comment board is the reason i rarely read comments.

if you don’t recognize the work as interesting, worthwhile or supportable that’s fine. move on. the world is obviously large enough to accommodate all of us and our varied desires.

what the world is too small to accomodate is illiterate and spiteful hacks.

have a criticism? voice it. and be prepared to defend it in the face of a critical audience.

    we are a critical audience.
your peers are a critical audience.
and anyone whom you direct your bile towards and in the intended presence of is a potentially critical audience.

why pretend that you care about backstabbing gossip and rumor mongering in your social scene if your only going to be a causative agent of such? we follow by example and your actions display a desire for an uglier, crueler and more intellectually stunted environment.

if i had to listen to you say all this shit in my presence i promise that moment wouldn’t last long.
what’s your fear of using your real names or at least a pseudonym that readily identifies you? it would be great to see the masks removed and your sour faces revealed.

you have a problem with our work? explain to us what you think that problem is.

you think our productions are random and chaotic? why? were you too drunk or high or just plain dumb that you didn’t catch a thread of the thinking in the work?

do you honestly believe that so much could be going on onstage without an incredible attention to detail and the safety of all those moving, speaking, singing, performing bodies? our director and choreographer put in more time working on these productions than a lot of companies i’ve become familiar with over the last 16 years of being involved with theater.

as actors in the productions, we spend endless hours reading and studying our material and the source material that invokes these shows. we read books relating to the work. we watch films related to the work. we work out together so we can do 4 hour long productions. we drop everything to get together to work on our craft outside of rehearsal so we can bring you something of great quality, beauty, and a little fucking humor.

if there’s anything you should walk away from this long winded diatribe with i hope it’s an understanding that implied violence isn’t fucking around. we work our asses off. don’t believe it? maybe we can show you sometime how strong our bodies and minds have become.

i’ll say thank you to those who have assisted us, to those who have shared a burden of understanding, to those who say ‘thanks’ at the the end of these mentally and physically grueling performances. a big ‘thank you’ also goes to those who share their opinions and criticisms of the work we do whether it’s in agreement with it or against, but who share their thinking in a constructive way. and especially to those who dislike the works, but respect the incredible effort that obviously, obviously, goes into its creation.

and to the rest of you who can’t do anything but spit on shit that you’ve never even looked at?
as my boy said before, “fuck me? fuck you.”

    let’s go.

  12. “if there’s anything you should walk away from this long winded diatribe with i hope it’s…”

… that you like long-winded diatribes? That you are pathologically incapable of making a succinct, comprehensible, non-self-aggrandizing-to-the-point-of-painfulness statement in any medium?

Thanks, the work I’ve seen already told me that.
