Just as beloved Slog commenter Baconcat was wondering aloud, “Why aren’t there any candidates here?” Seattle City Council candidate Brad Meacham appeared magically over Baconcat’s shoulder, smiling and wearing an especially fancy pair of shorts. Hey, Seattle City Council candidate Brad Meacham! What are you doing here? “Showing my support and meeting some people.” Say, Seattle City Council candidate Brad Meacham, do you support tents in Westlake Park? “We should be accommodating of public expression.” Wait, does that mean you think we should allow protesters to put up tents here? “Why not?”

By the way, Seattle City Council candidate Brad Meacham, have you noticed something weird about this protest? “I haven’t seen any other city council candidates here.” Hey, us either! Isn’t that weird? Why do you think that is? “I don’t know! It’d be possible to disagree with [the protesters’] approach, but we can stand up and say, ‘I agree with their ideals.’ Isn’t that our jobs?” That, Seattle City Council candidate Brad Meacham, is a really fucking good question.

  1. Bruce Harrell was the only council member who met with the John William’s supporters and protesters. Add that to his vote against the panhandler statue and his support for social justice causes is well established.

  2. Meacham’s everywhere he never appeared before he decided to be a candidate. If he wants to be an actual councilmember, he should pay attention to City law (no sleeping/tents in Parks) and talk about changing it, not just indicate empty support for various groups.

  3. @13 – Don’t worry, he’ll disappear again after he loses. He didn’t show up in plain clothes to support, but in a huge campaign shirt…clearly trying to take advantage of the media opportunity (and fortunately the Stranger bit). I’ve just stopped talking to him. His pandering pisses me off.

He wanted to speak at all the Protect Seattle Now rallies, but wouldn’t even come to the election night party because he was afraid it would lose. I realized he stands for what he thinks is going to be popular and gain him support. We don’t need that kind of “showing up”.
