Beau Breedlove, the former lover of gay Portland, Ore., Mayor Sam Adams, has accepted Unzipped magazine’s offer to be featured on the magazine’s May cover and traveled to Los Angeles this weekend for a nude photo shoot, editors announced on Tuesday.
Nothing wrong with being a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty. Some of my best friends are nuts, others are sluts, some are both—and some of my best friends have done porn. But let’s stop pretending that Breedlove was an innocent naif at the time of his affair with Adams. And let’s stop pretending that the exposure of the affair—and Breedlove’s subsequent self-exposure (the newspaper interviews, the television interviews, the porn shoot)—has somehow been traumatic for Breedlove. I know that’s the script for creepy-older-person/much-younger-person sex scandal, but it just doesn’t apply here.
Breedlove is an attention whore—not that there’s anything wrong with that—with a taste for older men. He’s loving this.
I don’t think that Adams could’ve avoided all of this by observing the campsite rule scrupulously. Some campsites are messes long before you arrive. Careful where you pitch your tent.
UPDATE: La la la, commenters: I’m not saying that Adams was a gentleman, or isn’t culpable here, or that he was right to bed this guy. But Breedlove was the younger person—blah, blah, blah—and we’re not allowed to speculate about the younger person’s motives, or examine his actions when a scandal like this breaks. Adams should’ve known better and is far more culpable, as the older person. But the possibility that Adams and Breedlove were both—to borrow a phrase—”a little bit nutty and a little bit slutty” comes closest, I think, to capturing the essence of this scandal.
So Dan, does that mean we can stop pretending that Mayor Adams was chivalrous in frenching the boy before fucking the man right after he turned 18?

I suppose, for the few touchingly naive out there, there is something to be said for “good government” or the ever-nebulous “ethics”, but at the base of this, it’s the same old American Puritan Ethic raising its ugly head: Simultaneously titillate and scold, and you’ve got them hooked.

1)Catalina is right…it’s ALWAYS about sex. And Adams shouldn’t be castigated for the sex, he should be castigated for being stupid enough to engage in a controversial relationship when your chosen career path is to serve the majority of the public who has the power to elect you into office. If you’re going to engage in something that might upset at least 51% of the electorate, you have only yourself to blame.

@ 14 – Actually, you & michael are saying pretty much the same thing. It’s all about bad choices and him not thinking with his brain. First, Sam lets his dick do the thinking when he hooks up with Beau (not that there’s anything wrong with that IF you’re not running for a prominent political office). Then, he lets his ego do the thinking in choosing to spice up his denial of the affair with righteous indignation (there’s plenty wrong with that).
My opinion is the same as it was when this broke: however most anyone might define it, I see “bad character” here. The guy STILL needs to resign.

In 95, I remember reading the French news about their president Mitterand’s daughter from an affair he had. The big controversy was over the fact that someone reported it. The person in the spotlight was the reporter who broke the story defending himself. I generally laugh at commie leftists who point to Europe as an example we should follow, but this is one of the cases where they’re right.
