There were more than 480 mountain gorillas alive in their main home in Africa's Virunga Massif this spring, 230 more than were there 30 years ago, a census by several conservation groups found. The big question is this: Why is the ape branch of primates so small? The variety of the monkey branch is stunning when compared to the ape branch. Yet one member of the ape branch exploded in number. How did this happen? Why didn't the tiny branch of apes get blown away like a dry twig in the wind?
