The state bill that would've held Christian-run pregnancy centers accountable to their patients for disclosing, up front, that they don't offer abortion referrals, discuss birth control, or offer comprehensive medical services to poor young women who need itâbasically, that they're not real medical clinics as their signs routinely advertiseâis dead.
Publicola has the scoop:
Standing in the wings of the House, a forlorn Rep. Laurie Jinkins (D-27), who strongly supported the legislation, confirmed its demise. The most recent version of the bill had already been pared down dramatically from Clibbornâs original proposal, which would have created an âimmediate cause of [legal] actionâ if a limited service pregnancy center failed to disclose what services it did and did not provide. Under the latest version, centers that violated the law would get a reprimand for their first offense.
I'm sure I'm not the only woman out there who is very, very bummed about this. (Men can be bummed, too. I'm just saying.)
