Severed Head Of Patron Saint Of Genital Disease On Sale

The severed head of a man said to be the patron saint of genital disease will go on auction in County Meath on Sunday.

The skull is allegedly that of St Vitalis of Assisi, an Italian Benedictine monk from the 14th century.

  1. Is this the same guy as St. Vitus, whose choreatic “dance” is one of the hallmarks of rheumatic heart disease?

This is what I get for studying for boards while reading slog.

I wonder how much it’ll go for?

  2. FREAKING OUT right now. Because I just learned that today, May 25th, is the celebration of the third finding of the head of john the baptist. That tickled me all by itself. That they lost and then found his head THREE times!! But now, other saintly head-related news, on the same day?!? Obviously this is proof of intelligent design, guys! http://orthodoxwiki.org/Third_Finding_of…

  3. One of the things I learned in Earth History this quarter was that there is a patron saint of geology. St. Barbara was one of those early Roman Christians who was condemned for her faith, and after a series of miracles that prolonged her life, her father himself beheaded her, and was struck to ash by lightning in retribution. (Or so the story goes, of course.) Since dying by lightning is sorta like dying in an explosion, and the principal threat to miners is explosion, and mining involves digging into the ground just like geology, the field ended up with her.
Of course, Nicolas Steno, who came up with the founding principles of geology and stratigraphy, was beatified in 1987, so he’ll probably displace St. Barbara if/when he gets canonized.

But yeah, St. Vitalis of Assisi was apparently a real slut in his younger days, and picked up a burning sensation or two before joining the monastic order. Apparently his new piety allowed him to cure people of such things.

  4. Campy morbid Catholicism! I love it!!!!

There’s a convent in Missouri that has the skeleton of St. Beatrice in a glass case on the altar. She was stabbed defending her virginity (or strangled burying her brothers’ bones, depending on who you ask.) It’s wonderful. The skeleton is encased in wax, and she’s got a little outfit on.

They also have the jawbone of St. Paul. The place is crazy with relics. Not only that, they do perpetual adoration, which sounds dirty, but it isn’t.

I should say that they are very nice ladies, if a bit eccentric. They grow all their own food and raise their own animals for eating. And they are very good cooks.
