Health care reform mandate: the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the individual mandate in the health care reform bill as unconstitutional in a 2 to 1 vote. The administration will probably appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, as the law’s efforts to reduce insurance costs depends to no small degree on the mandate.

Aid contractor kidnapped: an American named Warren Weinstein who works for a company that frequently does relief and reconstruction work for USAID was kidnapped by armed attackers. As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack or issued demands for the Weinstein’s release.

First Hill stabbings: SPD continues to investigate the grisly stabbings of two doctors and their infant adopted son (who died from his injuries). SPD has yet to release their theory of the crime.

Kalebu sentenced to life: Isaiah Kalebu, the man who committed the horrific South Park murder and rapes, was convicted to a life term and 98 years with no chance of parole yesterday. His surviving victim, Jennifer Hopper, wished him peace at his sentencing, writes Eli Saunders.

Rick Perry: the Governor of Texas and Prayer-a-Thon leader is expected to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination today. News of the announcement was leaked earlier this week.

Transportation news: Dominic Holden reports that the proposed $60 car tabs (for road repair, transit, and bike and pedestrian improvements) will probably be on the ballot in November. Meanwhile, the mayor’s proposal to build a high-capacity streetcar system is expected to be DOA in front of the City Council in its current form.

UK riots: UK PM David Cameron announced that he will be seeking advice from an American, Bill Bratton, who was police chief in Boston, New York, and LA. Because you really want the LAPD’s advice on how to calm down an angry public.

The markets: investors were further confused by the Dow’s finish; the index finished Friday with a 125 point gain. The stock markets have been all over the damn place this week.

McDermott harasser sentenced: a California man who left threatening messages for Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott was sentenced on Friday to a fine and 8 months in prison.

Here’s Wayne Shorter. Enjoy your Saturday.

  1. Nice to see that Slog (finally) picked up on that 11th Circuit ruling. This should set up a ruling by the Supremes in the last week of June of next year – four months before the election. It’s going to be interesting.

And a happy 85th birthday to Fidel Castro. Oh, sure, he turned into an asshole once he got into power (to say the least), but he was a true revolutionary in his youth.

  2. Say goodbye to the last chance at decent health care for anybody who can’t afford outrageous premiums or who can sacrifice the house they’ve worked their whole life for. Bastards!

  3. Vince, I was all in favor of the public option. As it is, though, Obama jammed through a deeply flawed bill with serious constitutionality issues. Don’t blame the “bastards” – your man Obama fucked up.

  4. Basil, you’re such a dipshit. Marxism and fascism are two diametrically opposite things. Clearly, you don’t know what either one means – you just like to throw around big words.

There are plenty of good reasons to oppose Obamacare. Too bad you don’t know the first thing about any of them.

  5. @6 I get socialised medicine at the Veteran’s Hospital. The other socialised medicine is what your government representative gets. Suck it, sap!

  6. @7 Marxism and fascism are actually very similar. It could even be argued that Marxism leads to fascism, and vice versa. Both rely on an intrusive central government, both try to control the lives of the individual, the priority of both is taking care of an obnoxious elite class.

Nazism was clearly a movement of the left (that’s where socialized medicine began, as a matter of fact), as was Italian Fascism.

The two are actually indistinguishable. That’s why it is 100% accurate to label someone like Barack Hussein Obama (if that is, in fact, his real name. Still not sure about that, and I’m still waiting to hear what happens with his 42 social security numbers) a Marxist Fascist.

  7. I’m also very excited to see Rick Perry enter the race. It appears that my first choice, Sarah Palin, probably isn’t going to enter this time around, which leaves a wide open path for Perry to wrest the nomination away from the RINO Romney.

Rick Perry is a strong, passionate christian patriot, and while I greatly admire Michele Bachmann, Perry has an unmatched record of executive experience, as well as a titanium spine to drive the marxists and fascists out of Congress, and to restore America back to it’s godly place in the world for the first time since the 1920’s.

If there were 57 states in the union (as Barack Hussein Obama famously asserted), Perry would win all of them by at least 20%.

You are witnessing the beginning of the end of liberalism, marxism, fascism, environmental extremism and the pagan worship of the tree, pot smoking, homosexuality, baby killing, and flag burning – things I wondered if I would ever live to see. The election of Rick Perry to POTUS will restore the America I fought for in Vietnam. It will be truly a happy day.

  8. Yes, and no doubt you waded through massive amounts of Agent Orange while you were in country, Baz.

That WOULD explain a great deal…

  9. 5 FTW

ObamaCare took a shitty system and duct taped a shittier mess onto it.

If you believe all Americans are entitled to health care
single payer is the only way to achieve it.

and, yes, Obama totally fucked up the debate on healthcare.

like he has totally fucked up on the debt ceiling debate.
