Get over it. The reason the viaduct is settling is because it's anchored in Jell-O, as would any "reinforced" version.
2
What would we do without the engineering experts at The Stranger?
3
The pit reminds me of the "concrete sarcophagus" they created over the Chernobyl reactor.
4
But...I love pudding! Almost as much as ice cream. You're treading on dangerous ground, Stranger.

I thought at first they were rats but it is obvious there are multiple demons flying out of the drill hole after 27 seconds. Clearly it is cursed native lands.
6
The biggest headline here is that they're suddenly able to release news on a day other than Friday. Must be "positive" news.
7
Page views must be through the roof with all the clicking required of the new format.

This will not end well.

It would be interesting to see a graph of viaduct settlement over time (including pre and post Bertha drilling; pre and post rescue pit drilling).
10
@9, that graph will be available from the city as soon as STP is tunneling Northward out of the pit and a bill for cost-overruns has been received by WSDOT and forwarded to SDOT.

It seems to me that there are a lot of" armchair construction experts" posting here. They sit in their comfortable chairs in front of their beloved computers extolling their imaginary expertise in underground drilling techniques. Face it, you guys don't know shit about what's happening in the tunnel, and what ever happens will still remain a mystery to you because you will still be sitting in front of your computer........ Did I break through the stupidity barrier? You never have been near the project or have any knowledge of the problems involved in this tunnel, the biggest ever. Go back to sleep or go back to the bar, your comments are just a waste of time.

@11, the problem is what you say also applies to most of the politicians and administrators who planned and who are managing this project.

I would like to know myself what is going on so I think the Stranger's points are more than valid. A journalist job is to question and we aren't getting answers, much less hearing anything. I have to drive on the viaduct twice a day, with my children in the car. Not that I think driving alone would be better if anything were to happen to me. My kids growing up as orphans scares me as much as us all winning the viaduct lottery. It may not be us but it feels like a really unsafe situation being set up, a bridge being replaced because it is dangerously old and falling apart, settling? While I am driving on it and stuck in bumper to bumper traffic while on it with not a single other option than the freeway which would take an extra 5 hours commute to our day? We don't have choices and are leaving our safety in these people's hands. I would like to hear lots and lots of scientific information and reassurance, or a plan to fix this mess!!!!!

Please wait...
