Sexism is still rampant in electronic-music culture—well, in all realms of the music industry. An astonishing example of it came to light a few days ago when a public post by a DJ/agent named Justin James seeking women DJs was posted on the website Pile Rats. In this case, James—a globe-trotting DJ who also runs a talent agency and not to be confused with this Justin James—made it known that he is looking to book female jocks... provided they meet his very specific demands that have nothing to do with the disc jockeys' track selection or mixing skills. (You can read his noxious assholery in the graphic below. Image captured by Amber Akilla.)

Do you think James has similar standards for the male DJs he books? Somehow one doubts it. While you could quibble about the first five points, some of which are legit, the last three are so blatantly sexist, you wonder how any self-respecting XX-chromosome-having DJs would accept James's terms. And to state the obvious, there are scores of great women DJs over 32. And then there's this: "Lastly and most importantly: do not suck. I only work with attractive female DJs that know how to read a room and play." Weird how James doesn't require mixes from his prospective charges. Wouldn't that help him in his quest to find women selectors who "do not suck"?

When James received negative feedback from his post, he replied to one detractor with the following.

So, you see, James is just following orders, just casually perpetuating a rotten system. What a mensch.
