What will I do if the Sonics leave town? Some compassionate folks
have suggested that I buy Huskies season tickets, or adopt Seattle U,
or go rabid for Garfield High. Those options are inadequate because I
want to watch the best basketball players in the world.

Oh, you’ll hear some fans opine that college basketball is better
because “they play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the
back.”

Bullshit.

The Sonics, one of the worst teams in the NBA, would beat the UW
Huskies by 50 points. The Sonics would beat Duke or North Carolina by
30 points. A great NBA team like the Celtics or Spurs could score 200
points on a great college team.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll turn on the TV at three in the morning to
watch the Eastern Iowa Agricultural Mortals take on Missouri Valley
Technical Ordinary People. I’ll sit on the sidelines during my weekly
game and provide color commentary on the great plays made by my fragile
friends.

But, in the end, I am a spiritual man and I want to worship the
basketball gods. If the Sonics leave, I will feel like somebody burned
down my church. recommended
