George Gershwin's music lends dramatic life to a script by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin about love, community, addiction, and death in a Gullah community. Controversial today for its depiction by white composers and writers of black characters (it was written in the 1930s), the opera has nonetheless contributed some of the greatest music of the American song canon and has always provided great, tragic roles for classical African American singers. It's generally acknowledged as the great American opera.
