How It Happened, What a Cop Said to Me After It Happened, and What Happened a Few Weeks Later When I Was Robbed Again

AWWW, did Mudede's hip-hop friends make you uncomfortable? Carry a burner, you whiny bitch.

Truism: Criminals have more guns today, because more people have more guns today.

More Legally owned firearms creates more chances for Illegally owned and wielded firearms.

The NRA has created a self-fulfilling prophesy, and a positive feedback loop: People need guns because so many criminals have guns. This creates more opportunities for criminals to obtain guns, creating a higher urgency in scared people to obtain more guns. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
5
Nice article, showing that even in the face of violence, guns aren't the answer.
Oh and I totally agree with your assessment of "people who insist on owning guns". I've fantasized about owning a gun but realistically, I don't think I could handle the guilt of taking anyone's life (sure don't shoot to kill... but if you miss your mark by an inch, then what happens?).
6
I have a canister of mace that I loop w/ a hair tie around my wrist for easy access when jogging or riding my bike, which I do all the time. There were some violence avoidance tips circulated via email some years ago. Here's a Snopes version (with corrections from some of the prior bad advise). http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/nine…

The pussification of America continues. Without proper protection you can only plead, beg and hope that your attacker's use of force does not maim or kill you. Your lack of self-preservation skills should not be passed on to the next generation.

The pussification of America continues. Without proper mindset and protection you can only plead, beg and hope that your attacker's use of force does not maim or kill you. Your lack of self-preservation skills should not be passed on to the next generation. I too wish to further peaceful action, but wishing is akin to denying 'what is'. Which is, there are bad people who do bad things to other people, and if you value your life, be prepared to act accordingly. If you don't value your life, at least respect that other people value theirs enough to fight for it, and don't try and abridge that right and responsibility.
Sorry for your experience and the emasculating rage you have to reason through.
9
Yeah, you can fight for your rights .. if you want to get into a firefight with somebody over $11 and a glucometer, I will not deny you that pleasure.
10
If "income inequality" causes these why are so few committed by women and older people who are disproportinately poor? Why did I just read about a mugging on the hill where the perps got into a Taurus?
It's strange how white liberals feel to proud to symapthize with those who violate their civil rights, especially when the perps are black. I don't see black folks doing the same when mobs of whites attack them.
11
I'm surprised that they couldn't find the phones that were stolen. They can be tracked by triangulation. Also, DCMA phones are pretty much deactivated when you report them stolen.
12
You've expressed exactly how I would feel in your situation(s). Infuriating, but you kept your head -- and your values -- about you.
13
@10. Where in the article did he mention race? Oh. Right...he doesn't - he does say "in a black hoodie" but that's clearly talking about an article of clothing, not ethnicity.

14
Apparently the moral to the story is that when people violate your civil rights you should throw money at them. And what does increasing public transit at night have to do with it?
15
@13 White liberals are a thousand times more likely to sympathise with people who violate their civil rights when the perps are not white. I did not state these perps were black, although I'm sure if the perps were white it would have been made clear. And if they were white skinhead types there would be no sympathy towards them.
16
@7, @8 Who's a pussy, bitch?

I walk the streets of Brooklyn, goddammit, with nothing but my confidence, wits and attitude. Been here over 20 years and no one has fucked with me on the street.

Guns are for pussies.
17
"If only we could just wantonly gun motherfuckers down. That'd fix things up real nice."
18
Very interesting read. I can empathize quite easily with just about every aspect of this story (except wearing the leggings).
19
Try and remember their shoes to help police identify the assailants later. They'll ditch clothing, but they always keep the shoes.
20
I'm surprised you didn't offer to take them to an ATM and give them reparations. In both examples you were threatened with deadly force whether it was a gun or a pack of dumb apes who could easily beat you to death. Hard to feel sympathy for someone who won't defend themself like a "psycho" would. I wonder if Tuba Man or Danny Vega would justify their deaths due to "income inequality"?
Pathetic.
21
@16
Wow you can totally go 6 blocks from your appartment in a neighborhood full of trust fund hipsters, how dangerous.
22
Seattle public high schools must be failing, if they teach their male high school students that glucose meters and insulin have high resale value, and that robbing people of their prescription medications is a positive strong step toward social and economic justice.
23
Could we please get detailed descriptions of these hoods so that we can avoid them ourselves?... Or do we have to assume every teen in a hoodie is a violent criminal???
24
@14- Clearly you have never had the pleasure of being dumped at the Mt. Baker Light Rail stop with all your luggage at midnight (since it isn't funded to run any later). I've never felt so vulnerable in my whole life, and it's no wonder there are roving packs of thieves that hang out there at that time... It's like shooting fish in a barrel.
25
I was mugged one night years ago in front of the Egyptian. I defended myself with the large bouquet of lilacs I happened to be carrying, and escaped unscathed. I am a gun owner and I'm glad it came to a flower beat down rather than a shooting. My assailant certainly smelled better, and I'd rather have that in my conscience than his blood even though I was MIGHTILY PISSED OFF about the destruction of my bouquet.
26
I just want to say, thanks for writing this and sorry for your experiences. As a young woman, this crap is frightening because I might also be sexually assaulted. I take cabs a lot at night around here mainly for safety. I hope the city gov't doesn't kill uber, because their cabs can pick me up from a sketchy street corner faster than any other cab company.

I don't carry a gun, but maybe I should? It is hard to predict in advance if a gun would just escalate the situation or if it might save me from getting raped. Robbed, I can deal with. Raped, murdered, mutilated, those things I would like to avoid.
27
"...walking, when a kid in his late teens wearing a black hoodie asked us for the time.

We ignored him and kept walking."

and you wonder why you got mugged? maybe it's because you are an asshole and no one in your neighborhood knows you. Smug gentrifying newbies who won't take the time to even acknowledge someone on the street are infinitely more likely to get mugged...fyi.
28
@27 newsflash fagtard, he didn't really want the time. He was try to set them up for a mugging.
29
Sorry that happened to you, dude, and once is certainly bad enough. Many of us can relate to that experience and the inevitable ruminations that happen afterwards. I agree with your conclusions.

Don't really have any advice for you, except keep your eyes open when you're out at night. You can sometimes spot potential situations before it's too late, although doesn't sound like that would help in your cases.
30
@28. newsflash straightdouche, No shit. But if your routine response to someone from your neighborhood asking you a question on the street is to ignore them, then you are setting yourself up...and generally being an asshole. Quit being a liberal classist/racist and get to know your neighbors, including street kids, and you most likely wont get mugged.
32
"walking, when a kid in his late teens wearing a black hoodie asked us for the time. We ignored him and kept walking."

Here's one tip - when they ask you for the time, don't ignore them as that just gives them an excuse to start following you. Just say "Sure" and make up a time.

At the very least, you'll know then whether they are really after the time or something else.

@27: You don't spend much time in the big city, do you?
33
@30- 1) What does this have to do with race?
2) The idea that I have to "get to know" street kids in order not to be mugged is frightening. I assume you would tell women that in order not to be raped they need to say hi to every man they meet?
People have every right not to be mugged or assaulted regardless of whether they are racist/classist assholes.
35
@30 I'm actually going to backpedal a bit and apologize for calling you a fagtard. That's disrespectful/retrograde to gays and lesbians. Your fucking idiocy has nothing to do with your orientation. I hope you bond with the local thugs before they borrow your iPhone.
36
@20,
I wonder if Tuba Man or Danny Vega would justify their deaths due to "income inequality"?
Probably not, but they should.

Criminal behavior doesn't form in a vacuum, it's learned, it's instilled by what happens around.

I really, really doubt the muggers were average kids with average families and average childhoods. It's even more unlikely that they were rich kids from nurturing, attentive families.

We as a society should be addressing the root causes of crime and poverty, not merely dealing reactively with the symptoms.
37
I was born and raised in big cities. I've lived on the streets for a considerable portion of my young-adult life. I get to know my neighbors and kids who hang out on the streets. I never ignore people who ask me questions, because I'm not a smug asshole like many people who are new to cities seem to be. I've never been mugged.
Never had an iphone, never will.
@33 "2) The idea that I have to "get to know" street kids in order not to be mugged is frightening. I assume you would tell women that in order not to be raped they need to say hi to every man they meet?"
hahaha, ok. I could argue with that but there is no point because it is based in no reality.
38
@34...yes
39
Sadly, poor black males are over-represented as convicted rapists. Lets see if the same justifiers are willing to say that it's not totally their fault? Maybe there are unique problems with certain cultures that we don't want to address be side we might hurt their feelings? It is much easier to blame it on guns or poverty. I don't see poor Asians acting this way and they stow away in fucking shipping containers to get here.
41
oh, you KIDS! (especially the ones with johnsons) i have lived on capitol hill since before you lil twats were born (i'm looking at YOU, cascadian), and no one has ever messed with me. ever. not even while waiting for the bus on rainier avenue south or downtown at night, walking down to broadway after 11pm, or strolling home from 11th and east pine after midnight. and if you boys had the BALLS to show up to one of the unofficial slog happy get togethers, you'd know that i am unfuckwithable. and tobias, i am very sorry that happened to you, and i hope your assailants are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
42
If you're committed to non-violence that's fine. I hope it works out for you. Some of us aren't and wouldn't feel any pity for laying out some stranger who threatened our life. I'm not sure what you're trying to say with this article. You got lucky in both situations. Maybe the majority of folks who are robbed aren't harmed. But make no mistake, it's not a formula. Someone might comply with all your robbers commands and still be seriously hurt, raped or killed.

Some of us would rather die fighting with our dignity in tact than live and allow others to walk all over us. It's just a matter of values.
43
The writer has a hyphenated name so already you know the direction the story is going to be written. The code words the stanger staff use start fairly quicky(late teens, youths, etc) i.e. black teens. You know they were black because no race is used in the story, not that it matters to most readers. They just make it stand out when you dont give the basic facts in the story. I am sure he left out some verbel slurs yelled at him( negative gay and white slurs).
44
Your dignity is worth dying to protect $11, a phone and a glucometer?
46
Nothing puts a smile on my face faster than naive white liberals getting mugged by blacks. Seriously, it's the gift that keeps on giving.
47
You crazy gun nuts above, too numerous to enumerate. Had he been carrying a gun in the situations described above and skilled it's use like some kind of death ninja- the smartest thing to do would have been exactly what he did. Ask that asshole in Florida now on trial for murder how happy he is about how his successful drawdown went.
48
This was a ok story about pacifism, but I have no idea what it has to do with guns, or why guns were mentioned other than shock value( not to mention page hits), probably for the opposite reason that race was carefully omitted as well.

Its great you have the *choice* and convenience to be a pacifist and to potentially be murdered, assaulted, or raped for those beliefs.

Not everyone shares the same beliefs.
49
Lot of internet tough guys on this thread.
50
Oh Beacon Hill, I love ya but you are truly a pain in the ass.
51
"Reducing income inequality and increasing access to public transit late at night"

I hear they turn those iPhones into soup and suckle on the plastic leftovers for nutrition
52
Income inequality? Lots of poor Chinese immigrants in the ID yet it's the blacks you have to keep an eye on.
53
@47 that actually went down well considering he killed the thug that attacked him. He's only on trial because race card players turned it into a circus. There were 28 shot just last weekend in Chicago. Seems to be a news black out about those.
54
Hmm, perhaps Tobias would care to offer a complete description of the attackers?
55
The cop's advice in the first anecdote was priceless: Some itchy-fingered punk is pointing a gun at you, you pull out your own gun and say "How badly do you want..." BLAMMO Itchy-fingered punk:1, you:0.
56
Like how the illustration makes him look white.

Da'Nile is a river in Egypt for most Sloggers. For the rest of us it's the name a baby mama burped up.
57
By the way, I flatly don't believe the cop, if there even was one, said that.
58
Bummer man- I was held up at gunpoint with a friend of mine by two guys in Oakland a few years back. Seemed kind of surreal. All they got out of me was $37 and my wallet, which I later got back. I was thinking of what to do next time, and it came down to "don't take my friend's suggestion of walking around the block of the restaurant talking", and rather, go back to my place to continue the conversation.

If there is a next time? Depending on the circumstances, I'm pretty sure I'd grab the gun and get my body between it and the guy.
59
@57

I second that. A bit too convenient for our writer's prejudices.
60
""If they tried to rob me, I would have pulled out my gun and asked them, 'How badly do you want my stuff?'" I wasn't in the mood to point out how incredibly foolish that statement was"

So, you filed a report and have this policeman's name so he can verify he said what you claim, right? At a minimum you read his name off his badge and can let us know which officer it was? Because if you didn't file a report and can't remember the officer's name, I say you're full of shit
61
Paging Phoenix Jones:

Isn't it about time somebody at The Stranger owed you a favor?
62
Also, @Tobias,

Income inequality? If it was income these kids needed, they'd be selling drugs. Splitting $11 between the 4 of them and optionally having to fence a stolen glucometer?

What these hoods need is an education in the fucking obvious.
63
Keeping a pistol on yourself is a cool way to get into situations where you have to shoot or get shot. Cause if someone already has their gun pointed at you it's pretty much too late. So what are you gonna do, pull your piece on any shiesty looking kid who reaches into their hoody? That shit isn't a magic wand.

Easier to just not carry anything worth stealing, and savor the knowledge your stick-up kid is probably going to get his ass shot over some trifling bullshit before he turns 30.
64
@57 -- That detail does seem a bit far-fetched, as does the idea that the cop who supposedly picked them up after being mugged didn't have them fill out any police report.
65
@26, oh poor girl. someone had a gun shoved in their face, but you have it so much worse because "this crap is frightening because I might also be sexually assaulted."

What, pray tell, makes it impossible for the author to be sexually assaulted? Does he not have a body?

What makes sexual assault so much worse than having a gun shoved in your face by some local savages (accompanied by death threats)? What part of this wasn't bad enough that your personal rape fantasy deserved a special call-out in the comments?

Get the fuck over yourself. You're no more victim than anyone else.
66
Christ on a fucking crutch. Tobias, you must
be a hipster because only stupid hipsters go to Chinatown to sing at Bush Garden AND take the bus at night. Do you also go to that pinball place and hookah lounge?

You are courting danger and you probably have
no clue where you are at. After dark, you are
walking in one of the most dangerous areas of the city. Can't call a cab?

You probably were walking up on King or Jackson
to 12th, probably King since it is closer to
Maynard. You are walking in crack fucking central and all of the homeless drug addicts.
King county and Seattle releases all of those
formerly incarcerated folks in that area.
There are over 1000 registered and unregistered
sex offenders in the west precinct. You have
the Jungle nearby. You have the homeless shelters nearby. You have the mental cases nearby. AND, you are talking about guns and
income inequality?????

Fucking go back to school and demand a fucking refund.

Here is a free lesson:
http://www.stratfor.com/weekly/practical…

67
#57, given how many cops there are in America, #64, I suppose there are a few who are dumb enough. But we're talking "a few." A damn few.

But it's awfully convenient that the author would find a member of the 0.001% right here in Seattle, in the middle of the big city, who'd make such an utterly insane statement at just the wrong time, but that fit perfectly into this narrative.

The whole story smells. And that was a good point about the police report. If this is true, then our lying friend Tobias ought to post the police report. And if he won't do it, then the Stranger's editors should demand it. Of course, that would require that they have a single shred of ethics. Which they don't.
68
Oops, my comment above was a response to #64, who responded to my comment #57. See, I actually care about being correct. There might as well be one of us. I call bullshit on this whole story. The Stranger should call the "reporter" in and demand proof, or forever shut their fuckwit mouths about how bad the Seattle Times is.
69
Is Beacon Hill getting more dangerous? I used to walk from Cap. hill along 12th to the Red Apple area all the time at all hours but nothing worse ever happened than people flipping me shit at the bar in Perry Ko's once or twice.
70
"Yeah, you can fight for your rights .. if you want to get into a firefight with somebody over $11 and a glucometer, I will not deny you that pleasure."

So exactly at what point would you stop being a victim and stand up for yourself?

71
I hate to sound cynical or racist, but I bet this shit would not have happened if you live in the North End. Also, you should've given them the business end of that U-lock; they work pretty well. The real solution to the problem of out-of-control youth is to a) require some sort of a TEST before people are allowed to REPRODUCE, and b) HOLD PARENTS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF THEIR CHILDREN.
72
BIRTH CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
73
Oh, shit--I forgot to be Politically Correct!!!!
The Stranger Thought Police( a subsidiary of Gay Gentrification LLLLLC) might haul me in for re-education!!!!! They control the Art & Music scene here and everywhere-just a matter of time before we all kowtow to their dirty butts!!!!
74
@21 Sorry, asshole, but we couldn't afford those neighborhoods. We moved into one with warring hispanic drug gangs, strip clubs, vacant factories, winos, junkies, and killings every Saturday night. It's a half mile to the subway, and a goodly walk anywhere else, and we walk, or bike, all the time. So fuck you, you trembling, fearful, gun-packing pussy.
75
Armed robbery, no police report? No cop names?

Total and utter bullshit. Calling Mike Daisy.
76
#71, this didn't happen in Beacon Hill either. Not to our lying buddy Tobias Hyphen-Hyphen, anyway. He made it up because he had to meet a fiction mag's deadline.
77
Let me guess, Jennifer Fox is pregnant again.
78
Tobias, Sorry you went through all that. You're lucky to be alive after 2 muggings. You did good. You're still alive and you didn't get the beat down.

Some thoughts:
1) Cultivate awareness of who is on the street around you.
2) Carrying pepper spay or a baton type weapon allow you to repel attackers without killing.
3) Avoid areas with young punks. Use different routes home depending on circumstances.

Only my opinion, but if you don't adapt to the threats around you, your luck will eventually run out. Stay alert.
79
#78, Tobias didn't go through that. He made it up, sucker. Or maybe he will produce a copy of the police report.
80
I decided to carry my work wrench in my pocket when I took the train home to Beacon Hill last night at midnight.. Never had to pull it out but the scenarios running through my head as I walked home kind of freaked me out.. Even that innocuous of a 'weapon' in my pocket made me a little amped up. I didn't like it. I can see how carrying a gun would make people paranoid and twitchy.
81
Stop the presses - clueless dude walks into a tiger cage draped with steaks and gets jumped.

Sure getting robbed/assaulted sucks and it sure would be great if we could get poor teen males to mellow out but who thinks that's going to happen soon. Know the situation.
82
As a 35+ year veteran of the work force and 3 time crime victim, I need to mention a few things to the author.
Facts are stubborn things, here are a few:
-- you are clearly over employed slinging plates, your logic skills are zip and street sweeping sounds more fitting
-- the silly dream that more legal guns is a bad idea is not demonstrated by any facts on this planet. Check the stats for the disarmed in Australia and England. Gun ownership is up in the past 20 years, violent crime is down. Look it f'ing up. Demonstrate the intelligence to stay over employed as a plate slinger.
-- reducing income inequality and increasing access to public transit late at night— HUH? Communism (income equality) and Socialism (mass transit) have been failures every time. There is almost 50% of our transportation dollars going to mass transit which provides THREE percent of all daily trips. Please keep your distance from my sphincter, WSDOT et al have been working it way too hard for years.
-- in short, killing low life petty thieves may not be the answer but I can guarantee you would feel better after that than you will the next time someone makes you a vuh-jay-jay AGAIN.
83
I don't envy nor blame you for the unfortunate set of circumstance you've found yourself in (twice.) It's fortunate that you didn't sustain lasting injuries and were able to escape relatively unscathed. If you choose not to arm yourself (firearm or otherwise) that is entirely your choice. I hope you take some lessons learned from these incidents and use them to avoid stupid people in stupid places at stupid times doing stupid things.

However, I don't think you've interpreted these muggings correctly. Both times, you were threatened with a disparity of force. A group, and a gun. You left yourself to the mercy of a thug and mob mentality. You hoped for a good outcome. Without the will or the means to fight back all you could do was hope. Hope that your $11 will make them happy. Hope that your iphone will make them go away. In case your missing the point, hope is longing for a future condition over which you have no agency.

If you're solution for personal safety and looking out for the safety of friends and family is to hope you'll never get mugged or be the victim of crime; then I wish you all the best.

Let me know how that impotent feeling of victimization is working out for you.
84
Sorry to hear about your experiences, Tobias. I've grown around Beacon Hill all my life and haven't gotten mugged, once. I attribute that not to being some sort of macho superman; just situational awareness and not putting myself in situations where I'm likely to get hit up by a group of bored high schoolers or wannabe stick-up kids.

No sensible person craves violence or wants to hurt people, but self-defense is a human right.
If I'm walking by myself on Beacon Hill, I take my chances. If I'm with my wife and 2 young children, you can bet your hipster backside than I'm using my concealed carry permit and packing a piece that I've spent time training with - not because I'm Charlie Bronson, but because I love my family and I value their lives too much to late some punk make the decisions about whether or not he feels like raping my wife or hurting my children.

I know The Stranger is a pro-human rights paper... I'm surprised more honesty about the issues of guns and self-defense aren't being addressed. Google "Pink Pistols .org" if you really want to know wassup. Or go to:

http://www.pinkpistols.org/

85
Sounds like you did the right thing. The 11 dollars and phone can be replaced.

Its a good thing you arent one of these scared sheeple who walks around with a gun. Pulling a gun in this situation would likely end with the wannabb gangsters shooting you then taking your shit. Life ain't as simple as some gun toting teabagger fantasy where you just pull a gun shoot everyone whenever you feel like it.
86
"If I'm walking by myself on Beacon Hill, I take my chances. "

More like because you are paranoid and stupid. Just sayin.
87
"-- in short, killing low life petty thieves may not be the answer but I can guarantee you would feel better after that than you will the next time someone makes you a vuh-jay-jay AGAIN."

Yeah killing someone over a phone and some pocket change makes sense, dipshit.
91
@90 that's why I have a small blade on me, it came with my socks but it would be perfect to stab someone with, twist, then panic and run to a police station. I'm not so sure even that would be worth the price of my cell phone, I think however the look on the assailant's face would be more than enough for me. Those delicious tears of, but god damnit, I had a gun, I was supposed to win. haha
92
LIBERALS: Their hearts in the right place but their head's are up their ass!!
There are so many things wrong with this journaslit I almost don't no where to start at. I'm going to start first by laughing at the fact that he is bewildered by the fact that no body stoped to help him.... OK, so since your not willing to stand up for yourself a person driving by should stop and stand up for you? IDIOT! Of course if they had stoped to help they were just suppose to say "HEY STOP THAT'S NOT RIGHT"? Because as he pointed out when a police officer told him to arm himself that that was just stupid. Soooo let me get this right they should stop and help you when you have a small "mob" of teenagers asaulting you... But they should only use words, you can't arm/defend yourself. "MORONIC" I also love that he says that's just how people in Seattle are, we just stand by and watch people get robbed. Well idiot I don't know where you're from but here we don't feel the need to put our lives on the line for someone who wont even stand up for themself. If the roles were reversed your saying that you would stop and help that person. let me guess you would be the first person to jump in and save the day by brokering some sort of peace deal is that it. I really want to go on & on about what an idiot you are and what selfish, self centered, arogant people you and those who think like you are but I'm not. Because there is no way of reasoning with a crazy person. I say that becuase in your head you live in this utopian world were everyone gets along and there is no crime or wars to worry about. When in reality those are things we have to come face to face with and deal with them. Honestly go back to school so that you can become even more educated & end up becoming this countries verison of a "WMD". It needs to be a law that if you haven't been a resident of washington for 7 years your not allowed to vote. Know what the difference between liberals from out of state and the one's that are from here is? The one's that grew up here have brains and are actually in touch with reality (for the most part). SERIOUSLY it's journalists like you that are the real Weapons of Mass Destruction and are going to be the one's who rip this country apart by writting about fear and creating mass hystaria. Sorry if this isn't written in perfect english I only have a high school education.
93
"I really want to go on & on about what an idiot you are and what selfish, self centered, arogant people you and those who think like you are but I'm not. "

Damn. Were you looking in a mirror when you wrote that?

94
So because the author is a is unable and unwilling to take the right mindset to protect himself and his close ones... everyone else should be disarmed?

Sorry, not buying it. You can choose to leave yourself at the mercy of thugs and criminals, I will chose to exercise the option to defend myself as my judgement sees fit.

Thankfully, the United States Supreme Court agrees with me, and we live in a nation of laws.

Sincerely,
Seattle resident and concealed pistol license holder.
95
The Stranger is such a rag. If you want to write an article about gun control, write it. Don't disguise it as a story about being mugged. I was digging the story until I got blinded sided by your politics. The Stranger is no better than Fox News, just targeted at different idiots.
96
@74
Oh look a new yorker who is all talk.

You shitheads seem to flap your lips anytime they are not wrapped around nanny bloombergs titty. I have yet to meet one with a spine to match his mouth.
97
at 53 Hernandez is on trial because he killed a guy and they´re going to try and figure out whether he killed him in a legally permissible manner. obviously that law is wild and he should go to jail

I agree that it´s just news because of the ´race card´. You´re also correct in diagnosing the deliberate sheltering of the mainstream sensibility from facts about conditions and behaviors in underclass ghettos. I think you should think patiently about whether the lack of coverage of black on black violence is meant to protect the reputations of black men, though. They´re certainly policed and imprisoned very aggressively. When I see those sorts of stats I wonder whether those policies are effective. To me it seems like liberals say ¨education¨ and conservatives say ¨prison¨ and both miss the point.

Also, I think lots of black victims of gun violence own(ed) guns.

@96 You evidently enjoy living in your little fantasy world, you pussy. I hope the real world never intrudes on you, as you'll probably end up shooting an innocent bystander. Or your own loved one in the dark.

Enjoy your paranoia, shithead, you evidently love it, and your bravado, more than life itself.

What you find paralyzingly fearful, is just a little everyday texture to those of us who know how to live in the real world.

As for Bloomberg, he's not so bad. He's held down taxes, cut way down on corruption, and ushered in a building boom like we haven't seen in ages. Giuliani with all his cronyism and egocentricity did little for this city other than make it feel like a police state for a few years. You don't even live here, so I have no idea what you think you're bitching about, bitch, but I can tell you we're going to miss Bloomberg when his term is up. Even though I'm a Democrat, I don't expect much from our next mayor, even if he or she is a Democrat.

Fact is, he was not prepared to deal with it any other way, with whatever means were available and possible, the first time. To extrapolate on his own experience, and apply it in judgement of others who choose to defend themselves, espeically when it's possible to do so, is the hight of conceited ignorance. It would not surprise me that he shivers in fear at the very sight of a firearm in his presence, pointed at him or not.

I fully expect him to be killed by another mugging within a few years-- By having the shit kicked out of him after he asks for his stuff back.

The smart inference would be about self-defense when it is POSSIBLE and NOT possible, not about guns per se. In fact, if he was armed and had any kind of basic knowledge, he could have showed him his piece when they first jumped out in front of him. 9 out of 10 they are not willing to risk THEIR life for $11 either. The only reason they attacked them is that they likely presented themsleves as vulnerable in the first place. He was lucky, some people in that situation are shot out of spite. For $11.

Firearms were not referred to as the great equilizer for nothing. On the streets, it's not always the civilized utopia you wish Seattle to be, and it never will be.

@ 96, I have no doubt that Brooklyn Reader is tougher than you. He demonstrates strength of character on a regular basis, while you display fear, fear, fear, and fear.

Always bet on the guy who has character, even if he weighs half as much as the scared guy with the weapon.

The biggest problem most of us oldsters have with the hipster class is their insistence that their stories deserve telling. This story does not deserve telling. I could stack the people that have been mugged at gunpoint more than once from here to the moon. Most of them are brown and poor, or white trash, and care about the speakers in their car, enjoy fast food, and watch network television and the entire Scary Movie series.

I sometimes have to house sit a few blocks from where this article took place. I had a guy hassle me for money saying he needed help since he just got out of jail. I looked him in the eye, put my hand in my coat and on my pistol and walked right passed him. He knew what was up.

I carry and never have been mugged. Criminals have a funny way of backing down when you look them in the eyes and put your hand in your coat. If you want to be mugged and tell all your friends the story of how big of a pussy you are then great. One day it's just $11 then its getting your head smashed in for no good reason.

@101, are you serious? As a former Empire Stater, I recognize east coast macho bravado for being the insecurity that it is.

I too, would love to have your magical ability to tell people's true character through internet shit talk... but I think you are mistaking political sameness with strength of character... a critical mistake amigo!

PS: Real tough guys have cauliflower ears and don't talk shit places where no one can get punched. Like the internet.

Here's the gist of this whole episode. Punks are on the street 24/7 and you better get used to it. They hassle each other and they will hassle you. Many youth like being outlaws. They do this because it's FUN. Rich kids, poor kids, middle class kids, they all like to be punks when it suits them. I've been there and regret it. You can't control this completely. Street kids carry all types of weapons, like it or not. They're afraid of each other more than you know. Stay out of their way as mobs of youth are always volatile. Hardened thugs are just a fact of life. Consider them armed. Maintain "situational awareness" at all times. If you carry, know how and when to shoot. Run or change direction first, then at least you pull yourself together for a fight. Whatever you do, do'nt become a passive, trembling, victim. That's your death warrant.

@Andrew S and all the other anti-Blackist here can go suck a Black dick then die:are you gonna blame poor Black youth for the eCONomy?Iraq?Afghanistan? The "lost" trillions we gave to the Spentagon? You do know that KKKoppigs go after Blacks males and let White guys go (just ask Chuck Hagel's son). Keep living in a dream, you willfully-ignorant motherfuckers. --- http://www.blackagendareport.com
