Deep End is Harold and Maude's evil twin—both were released in 1971, both concern a boy's sentimental education by older women, and both feature cars sabotaged for symbolic purposes and songs by Cat Stevens. But where Harold is saved by his older paramour, Mike is driven mad. Deep End is a bleakly comical chronicle of young sexual frustration, starring a leering high-school teacher, a hooker with a broken leg, and a hilarious vintage porn movie.
