I hated this movie when I first saw it. The mannered acting (particularly by Daniel Day-Lewis), the disorienting soundtrack, the scorching cinematography, and the big, big story about one of the crazy men who built this country into the mess it is now, all of this had only one thing to say to me: The director, Paul Thomas Anderson, had way too much confidence in his own talent. But after watching the movie, I failed to forget its images, to stop thinking about its plot, to silence the ghosts of its soundtrack. It is possible that the director has a correct assessment of his artistic worth. (SIFF Film Center, Seattle Center, siff.net, 7 pm, $12/$7 members)
