I will not lie. This film is not the end of the world. It will not change your life. You may even yawn during some of its episodes. So why recommend it? Because it’s directed by Lars von Trier. And why is this fact significant? Because von Trier is one of the few famous filmmakers who is fortunate enough to have very little distance between the way he thinks or imagines things and what we see on the screen. To watch a work by this director, and particularly the Nymphomaniac director’s cut, which is 324 minutes long and concerns the sexual history of a character played primarily by Charlotte Gainsbourg, is to see cinema in a state of freedom. You only need the fingers on one hand to count the number of big directors who enjoy von Trier’s level of artistic freedom. (SIFF Cinema Uptown, 511 Queen Anne Ave N, siff.net, 6:30 pm, $12)
