As much as I liked the idea of the female-centric cast and the bare-chest Oscar Isaac, was not impressed by Annihilation, when I saw it in the theater.
If those women were military trained, their actions made no sense.
And I saw that reveal in the video coming a mile away.
Annihilation looked right up my alley but... I didn't especially like it. It just wasn't gripping. "Mood movies" generally don't work for me, and this was much more of a mood movie - essentially a 2 hour music video - than a sci fi / adventure / thriller as it was billed. Movies like this frequently soak up award nominations and I struggle to understand why - these are formulaic movies that, IMO, don't explore any new ideas in any type of novel manner.
Make fun if Ben Affleck if you must, but he is actually a pretty good director. He has directed three movies, and all three were both critical and commercial successes, for what that is worth.
I know it doesn't make up for that one ridiculous Rolling Stone cover, but still.
I'ma hot take: IMHO the movie was better than the source material of from The Southern Reach novels.
Jasmyne,
Saw "Annihilation" and "Ex Machina". Both are excellent science fiction.
Predominantly female cast in our patriarchal death cult.
