Dario Argento’s Suspiria—the 1977 Italian supernatural horror movie—was about an American ballet student who transfers to a bourgie academy in Germany, and amid a string of brutal murders, discovers that the academy is merely a front for some supernatural cabal. Suspiria became known for its unique visual style, use of bright colors in an otherwise dark-themed film, and way of building tension with a freaky ass soundtrack by Goblin. (For more on that iconic Italian prog rock band, check out Dave’s “Why Should I Give a Fuck About Goblin” from November, when they played here.) Suspiria is a cult classic, but it also received some awards and is considered among the most influential films in the horror genre.

Today, news came with a freshly-dropped trailer that a reboot of the film will come out on Amazon Prime on November 2. Helmed by another Italian film director of some renown, Luca Guadagnino (of Call Me by Your Name and I Am Love, which features Tilda Swinton in a gorgeous sex scene—it’s even on a porn site), the movie will star Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and (of course) Tilda Swinton. Jessica Harper (the original lead in the 1977 film) will return in a secondary role, and Thom Yorke (that’s the leader of Radiohead, for the few uninformed of you) will provide the score.

All of these things sound fantastic to me and bode well for the reboot, which is described thusly: “As a darkness builds at the center of a world-renowned dance company, its artistic director, a young American new to the troupe, and a grieving psychotherapist become entangled in a bloody, sighing nightmare.” Check out the trailers for the old and new Suspiria below.
