This trailer looks great mostly because it does three things: (1) dispenses with any pretense of objectivity and doesn’t even try to act like it’s not going to be a worshipful tribute to N.W.A. (a black-and-white opening introduction to the trailer, by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, makes that much clear), (2) more or less promises that if you go see Straight Outta Compton, you will hear, at a minimum, “Boyz-n-the-Hood,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and “Fuck tha Police,” and (3) features a lot of butts! “I actually want to see the black-and-white doc more than the actual movie,” Mercury news editor Dirk VanderHart noted when I sent him the trailer. “But then also want to see the buttz in the movie.” Hey, Universal Pictures? You can use that quote on the poster if you want.
