With the recent announcement that Hood Famous Bakeshop is expanding to the International District, we’ve got a serious craving for ube, a type of yam with a purple hue so vibrant it would make Prince jealous, frequently used in Filipino cuisine. Below, we’ve rounded up some sweet spots around town where you can get your fix of the brilliant tuber (like Central District Ice Cream and the original Hood Famous Bakeshop, of course). For more things to eat and drink, try our list of specials to try this March and food and drink calendar.

Big Boys Kainan
This Hawaiian-Filipino fusion restaurant, which also has a food truck, offers a waffle dessert topped with ube sauce, a scoop of ube ice cream, and traditional halo halo (shaved ice) toppings like red bean and nata de coco on its restaurant menu. They also make malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts dusted with sugar) filled with ube custard, also with toppings.
