According to ancient Irish legend, Stingy Jack was a corrupt farmer who upon his death was denied entry to both heaven and hell. Damned to eternally wander the darkness of earth, Jack's restless soul carries a hollowed-out turnip, lit from within by the embers of hell itself, to guide his troubled path. Today, in an attempt to stave off the horror of our own impending deaths, we carve symbolic jack-o'-lanterns and drown our sorrows at joints like Ballard's comfortable and enchanting Irish pub the Old Pequiliar, where happy hour brings discount food (Irish nachos or chicken strips and chips, each $4) and thrifty booze (well drinks and microbrews, $3).
