Duk Li does not make the best dim sum in
Seattle—that you will find at Jade Garden and Monsoon (secret: The dumplings at the latter are made at the former). Also, the selection is somewhat limited, the fun of ordering from carts is supplanted by marking a menu checklist, and you’re basically sitting in your neighbor’s lap in the table-crammed storefront. But Duk Li’s dim sum is fast, fresh, hot, and unbelievably cheap. Unbelievable cheapness may be Duk Li’s cardinal virtue—if you can finish six bucks’ worth of food here, you are a titan of appetite—but everything is also quite tasty. I used to go there to get their sweet rice cake–it’s a sticky pastry with a hint of sourness because it’s fermented. Sometimes there would be a hint of green onion because they must have cut the pieces on a surface that had other food, but it was one of the few places I could find that made it. But the last time I was there I was trying to ask about something that was in their oven and the lady snapped at me like I should have known what the answer was, so I decided to take my business elsewhere.
Monsoon now makes their own dim sum dumplings. They stopped getting them from Jade Garden a few months ago.
