I’m writing right now from the cozy living room of the People’s Republic of Koffee—1718 12th Ave—which until a month and a half ago occupied a small open-air nook in the building next door. Owner/operator Kevin Hyder recently renovated and moved into the new space, a cute old house on the other side of the tattoo parlor, with a wraparound patio and great big tables and a chalkboard wall in the bathroom and carpets and saloon doors and soup and scones and pastries and coffee and WiFi. It looks like this:
See? Cozy! Hyder, a man of ideas, has even more plans for the place in the near future: barn dances, private catered dinners, comedy shows, comedy classes, writers’ groups, board game nights, weekend brunch.
They’re also taking suggestions. Anyone? Suggestions?

either that wallpaper goes, or i do
Prairie themed orgies would be appropriate and fun. Bobbing bonnets anyone?
Tapestries to absorb noise and working cats to kill rodents.
I’m glad someone has taken advantage of that awesome space. A couple friends and I rented the place about 2 years ago with the intent of opening a pub. That plan fell through for several very regrettable reasons and I’ve always been sad that we couldn’t make something great happen there. It’s a wonderful space and the landlord seemed like a really nice guy. I also hear that the owner of People’s is a great guy from a friend who used to work for him… At the very least they definitely make great coffee! I wish them luck!
This place used to be a pretty decent thrift shop.
I like the wallpaper.
Good luck, PROK!
I’m glad someone is using the old Seattle houses that are zoned as businesses. There are similar places sitting empty here along Roosevelt Way, if any entrepreneurs want to try their hand out in a neighborhood that includes The Racer Cafe, the Monkey, I Love NY Deli, and A Taste of India among its more successful enterprises.
I was recently at PROK and thought the outdoor wraparound patio would be a prime spot for outdoor cinema in the late Spring and Summer months. There’s ginormous wall on the north side of the patio that would work well.
If Kevin can get a full liquor license, I’d love PROK to become something like Austin’s Club de Ville: http://www.yelp.com/biz/club-de-ville-au…
One can dream, right?
I too like the wallpaper.
