They have also apparently let their domain name expire. Whoops!
About three weeks ago, I went to Tam Brothers in Ballard for pho. While we were halfway into our bowls, a giant rat ran across the dining room and, eventually, over my boyfriend’s foot.
We both jumped up, as did half the patrons. The staff seemed nonplussed about the whole situation. No real reaction, actually. We left immediately.
Goddamn auto correct – Than Brothers.

That’s funny. My Eight year old has a sniffle and I suggested Than Bros. The eight year old said “No, I wan’t some veggies for dinner.”
If you get veggie pho at Pho Cyclo it will come with all kinds of great stuff in addition to the veggie broth (tofu, brocolli, carrots, mushrooms) but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a menu item combining the veggies with beef broth.
Ballet on Pike has good Pho (lots of Veggies at least). I guess they are one of those fancy “pan-asian” joints.
Pho 900 has (or had – heard they are moving not sure if/where they have relocated) the best veggie pho. SO MANY VEGGIES! plus lots of tofu. Man I miss that Pho. Not living in Seattle anymore and the only pho available to me has noodles and tofu – no veggies. ๐
Yeah, those straw mushrooms are kinda weird. I don’t hate them.. but yeah.
I agree, Pho900 had the best veggie phรด by far. Wonder if they’re going to reopen anywhere?
7 – enjoy your MSG
The veggie pho at Pho 900 always had an overpowering corn flavor that didn’t agree with me.
Than Brothers is disgusting. They once mistakenly served me chicken pho instead of veggie. When I explained they’d brought me the wrong order and I was vegetarian, they took the bowl back, picked out the chicken, and brought it back. Same bowl. Little chicken pieces floating in it. That place is on permanent boycott now.
Okay, a rat running across the restaurant is about where I draw the line. I live in Ballard and fortunately there’s also Big Bowl Pho on Market, whose veggie pho has broccoli and carrots. Their portions are huge, the restaurant appears to be clean and the guy who’s always there is super nice. Give them a try.
@ 14 – yes yes! Big Bowl’s great, try their veggie wraps! If you’re looking for pho in Ballard, they’re just down the street from Pho Than. Clean, friendly, and pho filled with fresh veggies.
@orange
maybe you should blame your server and not the chain. i have gotten chicken instead of veggie ONCE (I go at least once a week) and they swapped it no problem.
Pho Cyclo is OK but their broth does not impress me. Maybe they actually dont use MSG … which is why the umami is missing.
Blecch, I miss Pho 900s veggie.
yeah….than bros ballard.
on top of the fact that their broth blows and noodles are overcooked…..last time i was there one of the teenage boys after delivering us our steamy bowls of sub-par pho sat down in a booth and proceeded to pop his zit ridden face in one of the mirrors.
after catching the barth coming from my mouth i vowed to never go back.
I have always found the Broadway location nothing if not consistent and predictable. It’s an experience that doesn’t mesh with the Ballard horror stories.
The carrot seems like a good idea, but to have broccoli in the pho chay, though, seems a bit off. I don’t tend to associate broccoli with Vietnamese dishes (but do with Szechuan much further north). Though not necessarily Vietnamese either, maybe snap peas or baby corn?
Try Pho Cyclo. My brother spent 2 days here and we ate nearly every meal at Pho Cyclo. I am dangling Pho Cyclo’s veggie pho in front of him to lure him out of Maine (a great state!), and back to the Northwest.
people on the internet can’t agree on anything.
I love Pho Cyclo, but if the room is full or there’s a line of people waiting for a table, go somewhere else. When they’re full the service is glacial and chaotic. 45 minute wait for spring rolls is too much.
