Jean: The Other Raw Canvas
Art/Not Terminal Gallery 2045 Westlake Ave, 233-0680. Through Oct 3.

The Stranger's brand-new Poster of the Week column is our stab at pushing poster culture forward--singling out the best, encouraging more, better, weirder, and more varied postering. So here, instead of a club advertisement, is a poster for a gallery show. I just love seeing art galleries jumping into the populist fray, there among all the club dates and political propaganda and lost-kitty posters. The poster itself--a beautifully screen-printed washed-jeans blue, calm and homey--holds its own in the telephone-pole chaos, reminding us that culture travels along a lot of different paths, appearing where you least expect it.

This show features work on and about denim, but Flatchestedmama, the artist and designer of her own poster, is also a student of subterranean communication, with her sweet, random postcard art--some blank, some carrying a preprinted message that is anything but canned sentiment. "Everything that I do by accident is more successful than not," she says, and to that we say, amen sister. EMILY HALL
