After releasing the LPs Buck the Saw (1994) and Choked Up (1996) and taking a seven-year break, locals DJ Sureshot and Mr. Supreme have returned to join heads and record collections for their latest release, Twice as Nice, on Light in the Attic Records. Twice as Nice clocks in with 29 tracks--half of which are interludes--of hiphop, jazz, downtempo, funk, soul, and disco beats combined with live instrumentation, creating a record that is part DJ Greyboy and part Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz. The Sharpshooters sound isn't designed for the grit and rawness of urban landscapes--it's more along the lines of a master plan to speed from the back alley straight to a sunny vista. The beats and grooves are solid, and although many of the samples aren't groundbreaking, the album runs consistent and is easy on the ears. "Dew Drops" successfully combines a firm breakbeat with a filtered keyboard stab, which makes for a soothing, contemporary groove. "It's the 'S' Numero Uno" uses tasteful live tracking with samples and a dreamy Rhodes that captures the Sharpshooters collective experience well.

DJ Sureshot (AKA Shane Hunt) and Mr. Supreme (AKA Danny Clavesilla) met back in 1993 due to a shared love of beats and their massive record collections (Mr. Supreme apparently owns over 10,000 pieces of vinyl). They have since been featured on over 30 releases, on labels such as Om and Ubiquity, and have shared the stage with Maceo Parker, Kool Keith, Peanut Butter Wolf, and Ben Harper.

To help celebrate Light in the Attic's reissue of the soundtrack (composed by session drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, known for his work with James Brown, King Curtis, and George Benson) to the blaxploitation film Lialeh--AKA "the black Deep Throat"--the Sharpshooters are playing host to a party that should keep the beats tight all night long with sweaty funk and soul. They'll have the assistance of visuals from the film, and bikini-clad porn wannabes passing out popcorn (extra butter, please). Sounds like this should be an evening of extra-sexy grooves, so I'll be sure to dust off my pimp cane and get my powder-blue leisure suit dry-cleaned for the occasion. NICOLAE WHITE
