SATOSHI TOMIIE
Crucial in bringing club culture to Japan, this 37-year-old Japanese DJ/producer lent Asian flavor to house pioneers Frankie Knuckles and David Morales' Def Mix Production team in the late '80s. His knob-twiddling and keyboard work have appeared on an absurd profusion of releases by people like Michael and Janet Jackson, U2, David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Björk, and Technotronic. But as a DJ and recording artist, Tomiie operates far deeper in the underground. His full-length debut as a producer, Full Lick (Columbia, 1999), features guest vocals from ex-Sneaker Pimps frontwoman Kelli Ali, Diane Charlemagne (best known for her soulful melismatic vox on Goldie's Timeless), and male house fixtures Robert Owens and Cevin Fisher. The disc welds both understated crooning and over-the-top belting to brooding progressive house and slick breakbeat concoctions that tickle your inner drama queen. Behind the decks, Tomiie delivers the big anthems you'd expect from a guy with a Global Underground: NuBreed CD in his discography. Tomiie makes his Seattle debut tonight with a four-hour set. REMIXED
Obelus--local live electronic duo Adam Pessl and Jason Goessl--have nobly started a night that spotlights Seattle's electronic and experimental underground musicians. They promise that REMIXED will explore "atmospheric and ambient soundscapes with DJs, live acoustic, laptop composition and free improvisation." Expect more coverage of this endeavor soon.
