I've written about DEK before, I know. But I'm writing about them again because the teenage quartet finally released Boner, their debut full-length. The album came out on Finger Records earlier this month and the band is playing its official CD release party on Tuesday the 22nd with Agent Orange at Graceland.

Boner (oh to be a teenage boy) is 16 tracks long, clocking in at just under 40 minutes. So if you do the math, each blast of furious guitars, heavy bass, and quick drumming averages about two and a half minutes a hit. The vocals are snide, the lyrics are bratty, and the attitude is hilarious.

They sum up their outlook perfectly in "Back from the Dead," singing, "Punk rock ain't no fuckin' trend/it's about having fun and living/Fast and rude no rules to follow/about taking and not giving."

They're snotty high-school boys (okay, actually they're quite nice) who are just as bored and uninterested in listening to another All-American Rejects song on the radio as they are in sporting the typical punk rock uniform (leather jackets, spikes, Mohawks, etc.). So they wear goofy shirts, furry coats, vinyl pants (or Peter Pan and chicken costumes) and they make jokes about boredom, killer gorillas, and themselves.

"They beg for all their shows/And they're rich mauge [sic] pompous blokes/Their manager's a funky punk rock junky/They're so lucky!" taunts the song "I Hate DEK," where the chorus is, of course, a sing-along-able "I hate thee DEK."

And sure, the old-school punk rock sound has been done before, but these kids just might be helping to keep alive the art of ballsy fun in adolescent music. But more than anything they're teenage boys, and that's what teenage boys do (unless the teenage boy is a crybaby... don't get me started).

Of course, DEK's antics and attitude (and the parental support that has afforded them nice gear) have gotten the kids their fair share of public lashings (most appearing on the band's website message board), but even then they just laugh and join in with the haters in making fun of themselves. Hate them and they'll feed off it.

So like I said, the show is on Tuesday. It starts early with doors at 6:00 p.m., and 10 bucks will get you in. The HollowPoints, the Lashes, and Dollarstore Cowboys open, with Agent Orange rounding out the night. MEGAN SELING
