Broadcasting all day, every day since 2007 (first from a basement in Phinney Ridge, now from an attic in Wallingford), internet radio station Hollow Earth provides an eclectic, genuine alternative to Seattle's handful of half-decent airwave options. With over 15 DJs free to spin a wide variety of local independent artists, broadcast live from house shows throughout the city, and share oddities like found sound and tape collages, Hollow Earth acts as an important offbeat outlet for young musicians.

If our current economic crisis has taught us anything, though, it's that there's no such thing as a free lunch. Hollow Earth's bills—roughly $250 a month—have to get paid somehow. The station has often relied on benefit shows for support in the past, but its second annual Magma Festival—a monthlong DIY celebration that starts this Friday, March 6—has the makings of something truly special.

The festival's eight shows, taking place at all-ages venues spanning the entire city, will host a bounty of local talent including the Moondoggies, TacocaT, Mount Eerie, L.A. Lungs, and a night in which the Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness will be covered in its entirety. It's a good festival for a good cause and a great way to ring in spring for the entire month of March.
