Broadcasting all day, every day since 2007 (first from a basement in
Phinney Ridge, now from an attic in Wallingford), internet radio
station Hollow Earth provides an eclectic, genuine alternative
to Seattle’s handful of half-decent airwave options. With over 15 DJs
free to spin a wide variety of local independent artists, broadcast
live from house shows throughout the city, and share oddities like
found sound and tape collages
, Hollow Earth acts as an important
offbeat outlet for young musicians.

If our current economic crisis has taught us anything, though, it’s
that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Hollow Earth’s
billsโ€”roughly $250 a monthโ€”have to get paid somehow. The
station has often relied on benefit shows for support in the past, but
its second annual Magma Festivalโ€”a monthlong DIY
celebration that starts this Friday, March 6โ€”has the makings of
something truly special.

The festival’s eight shows, taking place at all-ages venues spanning
the entire city, will host a bounty of local talent including the
Moondoggies
, TacocaT, Mount Eerie, L.A. Lungs,
and a night in which the Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie
and the Infinite Sadness
will be covered in its
entirety
. It’s a good festival for a good cause and a great way to
ring in spring for the entire month of March.
