Downtown joint 2nd Avenue Pizza used its back room to host frequent all-ages shows, but it shut its doors in 2007, leaving Seattle's short-lived pizza-and-music scene to go stale as old cardboard crust. Still, everyone can agree that music is rad, pizza is delicious, and Seattle needs as many all-ages spaces as it can get—so it's righteous news that after 27 years on Capitol Hill, Piecora's Pizza has decided to start hosting bimonthly all-ages shows.

In January, the restaurant's back room, a banquet-style hall perfectly suited for large yet intimate parties, started going idle, so employees suggested to owner Richard Piecora that they start hosting shows. "We're trying to keep it mellow and intimate," he says. "We're not pushing food or drinks, we just want people to have a place to play."

The low-key concerts are starting out as bimonthly, but the restaurant is considering upping the frequency to three or four a month come summer. This Friday, March 20, Ty Willman of Pearl Jammy alt-rock group Mass Sugar is playing a solo set—the music's not really my scene, but it will be a chance to check out the spot's potential as a live venue. Plus: pizza!
