BURNING, MAN: BEATS ANTIQUE AND FILASTINE
Get to your ethnotronic-groove happy place tonight. Oakland troupe Beats Antique embrace musical influences from the Middle East, Africa, Central Europe, East Asia, and London to create hybrids to which folks can shake their dreads and swing their gauged ears. Ex-Seattle producer Filastine (formerly of Infernal Noise Brigade) deals in a grittier brand of world-music-inflected electronica. Like comrades in foundation-threatening bass Maga Bo and DJ /rupture, Filastine filters his panoramic sampling—especially of Arabic and African sources—and rhythmic mongrelism through a heavy dub spectrum. Filastine's aim seems to be to uproot and disorient you from typical electronic-music expectations and thrust you into a groove-wise setting where Esperanto is the lingua franca. LAPTOP BATTLE TURNS 10
The Laptop Battle turns 10 this year; if you've never witnessed one, now's a grand time to rectify that oversight. Sixteen combatants each get three minutes to strut their laptop-generated sonic tricks in single-elimination rounds, judged by so-called impartial sages (this year, your Data Breaker columnist is one such joker). Tonight's competition features loads of Northwest luminaries, including Chocolate Chuck, DJAO, PotatoFinger, Suttikeeree, Andrew Luck, Vox Mod, Miniature Airlines, and the Googly. They'll be rated on sonic output, showmanship, and crowd reaction. The Laptop Battle's always a concentrated blast of energy and invention. You may come away with a new favorite performer. ELECTRO-FUNK ROMEO B. BRAVO SEXES UP STOP BITING
Representing San Francisco's Frite Nite Records, B. Bravo is the Bay Area analogue of LA's Dâm-Funk: a renovator of slick '80s funk and electro for 21st- century ears and asses. The synths in Bravo's tracks emit vivid neon tones—they sound like satin sheets feel—and the vocals are all mellow falsettos, oozing in perpetual "woo" mode. This is a joint booking by Stop Biting and J-Justice & Treasure's City Soul organization. Bravo just might be the sexiest-sounding headliner in the former's long history.
