FRIDAY 8/24

SEATTLE HIPHOP EMINENCE SPECS WIZARD GETS COSMIC

Cosmic is a relatively new night at the Living Room featuring Specs Wizard, Seattle hiphop's spectral enigma, a superbly gifted cat who's been grinding practically since the genre's beginning, and the only rapper ever to appear on Alan Bishop's Abduction Records label. Specs is as soft-spoken as an MC can get without fading into the room tone, but his flow is addictive and even soothing, and his production technique privileges aural oddities as much as it does funkiness. Full of surprising elements and intriguing samples, his tracks insinuate themselves into your mind with subtle stealth. Keep close tabs on whatever he does. Living Room, 8 pm, free, 21+.

SATURDAY 8/25

REVEL SHAMELESSLY WITH SAN FRANCISCO'S REILLY STEEL

The Shameless Social imports San Francisco producer Reilly Steel for this month's session. Steel's been climbing up the electronic-music food chain with a slew of releases that ramble among the loftier spectra of techno, house, broken beat, and UK garage. Seattle's WD4D has been on another roll lately, both in the lab and onstage; he killed it at the Crocodile while opening for Onra earlier this month. WD4D's recent collabs with JusMoni and Sufi have hit that sweet spot between accessibility and exploration, bringing future-bass flavor to hiphop and R&B formats. With Introcut and Recess. Electric Tea Garden, 10 pm–4 am, free before 11/$5 11 pm–midnight/$10 after midnight, 21+.

TUESDAY 8/28

BIZZART, NAMECLONE CREEP ON HIPHOP'S DARK, NOISY SIDE

Part of the LA-based Gutter Trunk Posse, producer Bizzart (aka Gothic Cholo, aka Arthur Arellanes III) makes tracks that are rough around the edges and even rougher in the core. He has a proclivity for extreme tones and textures in his music, resulting in some of the most challenging, heavy, and noisy hiphop foundations this side of Dälek. Seriously, this is fearsome, chaotic stuff. Although not as dense and abrasive as Bizzart, the productions over which nameclone (aka Shark Dentures) raps invade the dark side of the sound spectrum, too. His boisterous, polysyllabically perverse tracks strut in the rugged, eerie twilight zone between anticon and Definitive Jux's toughest output—especially Aesop Rock's. With Suttikeeree & Introcut, Eardrumz, AbsoluteMadman, and Suntonio Bandanaz. Lo-Fi Performance Gallery, 9:30 pm, $5, 21+.
