FRIDAY 1/30

STRAIGHT OUTTA BERLIN— MAREK HEMMANN'S MINIMAL, GENTLY EUPHORIC TECHNO

Pro tip: When a bald, bespectacled Berlin techno/house dude comes through Seattle, you should probably go see him perform. Case in point is Marek Hemmann, who's in town tonight on his first North American tour. Recording for the highly respected Freude am Tanzen label, Hemmann makes coolheaded tracks that pump and chug with efficient minimalist brio, often spicing up his cuts with lush synth melodies that spiral upward with restrained glee. Support comes from two of Seattle's most accomplished and versatile veterans of 4/4-oriented electronic music, Pezzner and Nordic Soul. Re-bar, 10 pm–3 am, $13 adv, 21+.

SATURDAY 1/31

TRUNCATE'S NO-FRILLS/ HIGH-IMPACT THRILLS TECHNO

The +Plus night has become a reliable incubator of elite, hard-charging techno, thanks to the sonic expertise of resident DJs Miss Shelrawka, Sone, and John Massey. Tonight's another good 'un, with Los Angeles DJ/ producer Truncate headlining. He specializes in a no-frills/high-impact-thrills style of techno that is ideal for those moments when you want to blast your body into a higher gear and make yourself feel as if you're weightlessly whirling around inside a spaceship. Nail-gun-powerful, 140-bpm tracks with trippy little synth squiggles do the trick for Truncate. Bonus: +Plus will be giving away two general admission weekend passes to the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit, May 23 through 25. Just attend this gig and enter the random drawing. Re-bar, 10 pm–3 am, $15, 21+.

DJ ONIONZ'S INSTANT DANCE-FLOOR HEDONISM

I've somehow gone my whole life unaware of DJ Onionz, but the smart folks who run Seattle's Diggin' Deep night proved their serious knowledge by booking this respected New Yorker, the son of jazz bassist Victor Venegas, who's played with Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and Mongo Santamaria. For the last 20-plus years, Onionz (Andrew Venegas) has been maximizing dance-floor action with a potently hedonistic style of house and rave music. While you should be suspicious of any artist who uses Z instead of S for plural nouns, you can't deny Onionz's freewheeling party vibes both in the studio and on the decks. With Ramiro, Xan Lucero, Deepvibez, Jeromy Nail, Tait Collins, and Sean Swanky. Monkey Loft, 10 pm–4 am, $10, 21+.recommended
