Broken Disco is “going fishing” for the summer. It was subtly
announced on the flyers for this month’s installment, but the
über-night, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary, is
taking a break. It seems like a reason for worry, but they’re promising
a return in the fall, so there’s no fat lady singing.
Instead of going quietly, Broken Disco is going out with a
contrasting pair of headliners Friday, May 9, with the melodic,
abstract production of Lusine coupled with the manic,
sometimes-costumed beat-freakery of Mochipet. Ambient into
breakcore? Sure, why not? It should be fun watching people try to shift
musical gears that quickly.
Keeping in the same pan-genre vein, down the hill that same night is
the first installment (of two) of the pornographically titled Static
Glide at the VIP Room, a night focused on “live electronic music
without borders.” They’re bringing in anticon’s Telephone Jim
Jesus as a headliner, which easily fulfills the borderless
descriptions. TJJ’s latest album, Anywhere out of the
Everything, deftly mixes glitched-up folktronica, stuttering,
staticky hiphop, and even delicate IDM, so it’s hard to say what
direction a live performance will take.
In new club night news, there are two new vacancy-filling monthlies
you’ll want to mark on your calendar. The first, HOME, is second
Thursdays at the Baltic Room, taking over Oi Vay!’s old spot.
Showcasing local talent, the night has a rotating cast of residents
(Miguel Alvarado, Levi Clark, and TRONA) joined by a monthly headlining
guest. They aren’t keeping things genre-specific, going so far as to
include progressive and breaks with the house, drum and bass, and
electro.But considering that they’ve pulled in Red Pony for their
second installment, the night looks like it might avoid becoming some
“electronica” cheesefest.
For house heads, Uniting Souls’ new monthly (taking over Krakt’s
vacancy) is a welcome addition. Dubbed Somethin’ About House,
the new monthly has the advantage of being at the house-friendly Re-bar
instead of down in Belltown, removing that barrier to admission. The
debut installment is headlined by the UK’s Eddie Leader,
one-third of production crew Slum Science, who will bring the fruits of
his decade of experience in the underground house scene across the
pond.
