Dealing with mounting debts, Calvin Johnson, owner of the Olympia-based independent record label K, has put up the building that serves as its headquarters for sale. A former synagogue, the edifice is reportedly worth $399,000. As noted in The Stranger in February, K owes dozens of its artistsโ€”including Kimya Dawson, Phil Elverum, and KARPโ€”substantial sums of money. The case of Elverum is particularly difficult, as his wife, the musician/visual artist Geneviรจve, is battling pancreatic cancer; the couple has been forced to launch a GoFundMe campaign to handle medical expenses. To cut back on expenditures, Johnson has reduced K’s release schedule to four albums, down from its usual 12 to 15. As he stated in The Stranger article, Johnson vowed to The Olympian reporter Molly Gilmore that K will continue doing business, despite its financial troubles.
