DISTORTIONS PRESENTS VOLTAGE CONTROL: OLD, WONKY ELECTRONIC MUSIC ALERT
Okay, this is sort of awkward. I’m Veins, half of the DJ team—with the super-knowledgeable Explorateur (Valerie Calano)—that’s putting on this night, which is called Distortions, a new monthly outlet at Vermillion for whatever we feel like spinning. But forget about me and focus on the other folks on the decks. Remember the great monthly at the Living Room (RIP) known as Voltage Control? Run by the Naturebot (Ian Scot Price) and Electrosect (Patrick Haenelt), Voltage Control focused on electronic music made before 1983, the year techno and house started to dominate clubs. Therefore, the tunes Haenelt and Price spun veered toward the weird, quirky, and non-grid-like end of the EM spectrum. Subbing for Price tonight is Panabrite (Norm Chambers), who’ll be bringing some of his vast stash of rare masterpieces. Expect to hear deep cuts by Vangelis, Bernard Parmegiani, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Mort Garson, and many more synth wizards. Vermillion, 9 pm, free, 21+.
GET SHELL-SHOCKED BY JUNGLISTS SKYNET AND THE INSIDERS
Santa Monica, California, via Brighton, England, producer/DJ Skynet (aka Nathan Vinall) has been on the dance-music scene since acid house was the big thing. (Can it really be 25 years ago? Time flies when your brain cells are soaking in lysergic acid diethylamide.) Now based on America’s West Coast, Skynet has established himself as a guardian of dark and hard drum ‘n’ bass; check his many releases with Stakka for proof. If you like your electronic music to make you feel like you’re ensnared in a hectic war zone, Skynet’s got you covered (and smothered) in fraught atmospheres and remorselessly brutal beats. English duo the Insiders make fleet drum ‘n’ bass with a bit more melodic finesse and a bit less rhythmic bombast. There’s only so much shell-shocking one can take, right? With Rob Noble. POST TERRESTRIAL: A STRANGE DJ NIGHT HOSTED BY BRAIN FRUIT
Post Terrestrial is yet another new DJ night at Vermillion, which is becoming a hub for adventurous music in Seattle. Jonathan Carr and Garrett Moore—the smart, talented musicians behind Brain Fruit and Particle Being Trio—head up Post Terrestrial, a forum for DJs to play the most challenging experimental and electronic music they can find. It’s possibly the strangest Saturday night event in the city. This month’s guests are Wall of Sound co-owner Michael Ohlenroth and Kaori Suzuki, maker of rad modular synths for Magic Echo Music.
