CLASSICAL
FRIDAY 9/7
BYRON SCHENKMAN–Seattle Baroque’s artistic director and harpsichordist makes his debut appearance on the modern piano. He’ll play two Haydn sonatas, Schubert’s last solo piano composition The Three Piano Pieces, and shorter works by Mendelssohn and Moscheles. The pre-concert lecture led by Town Hall music director Fred Hauptman starts at 7 pm. Town Hall, 8th and Seneca, 322-3118, 8 pm, $16/$18.
SATURDAY 9/8
OLYMPIC CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL–Except for the everlasting schmaltz of Ferrante and Teicher, piano duos are hard to find these days, which is too bad. Countless great and second-rate composers exploited the expanded sonorities of four-hand piano music. Back in the day, the Rite of Spring thundered forth on two pianos before its public premiere and heck, even Stockhausen wrote a piece for two pianists not too long ago. Anyway, this gig has some dandy pieces for piano duo by Scarlatti, Mozart, Schumann, and Debussy. The Barn, Center Road, Quilcene, WA, 527-8839, 2 pm, $14/$24. Also Sun Sept 9.
SUNDAY 9/9
ORCHESTRA SEATTLE–The Stanwood Camano Music Festival has recruited this fine orchestra and the Seattle Chamber Singers for a concert of Baroque Music. Chummy KING-FM personality and conductor George Shangrow leads the ensemble in music by Farina, Vivaldi, Corelli, and Bach. Stanwood High School Theatre, Stanwood, WA, (360) 629-6110, 2 pm, $12.
NEW CENTURY COLLABORATIVE–Violinist Kyung-Sun Chees, pianist Laurent Philippe, and Seattle Opera tenor Wesley Rogers join forces with other musicians to perform Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Piano and Spohr’s Septet in A Minor, op. 147. I read “New Century” as a cryptic reference to the musicians (their first concert of the new century?), since Spohr and Britten, despite being fine composers, were as radical as week-old turnips in their respective heydays. Kirkland Performance Center, 350 Kirkland Avenue, (425) 899-9900, 7:30 pm, $10/$18.
MONDAY 9/10
DETONATOR BETH/TRIPOD/A. FREQUENCY–Oh my, some naughty wag decided to put three performance art groups on one bill. Cataloguing the astonishing antics, musical mayhem, and kinetic poetry of these performers would be pointless; they all tend to inflict something new at every show. I do hope that A. Frequency will bring the fire extinguishers and gossamer plastic curtains, though. Club I-Spy, 1921 5th Ave, 9 pm, $6.
WEDNESDAY 9/12
MARCOS CARMONA–Composer Marcos Carmona gives a talk about flamenco composition. Apart from discussing how he interweaves contemporary technique with traditional flamenco, he’ll demonstrate falsettas, a way to propel the music with extended melodic riffs. Trained by Gypsy artists in Seville and Madrid, Carmona is also an exceptionally fiery flamenco guitarist, so these demonstrations should be a thrill. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 634-0919, 7:30 pm, free.
