• Torres just released her sophomore album, Sprinter, and if you’re in need of a rock session, then I’d suggest digging in. (She hasn’t been yanked from SoundCloud, unlike some artists.) Test out the title track and pique your curiosity. Singer Mackenzie Scott’s tone gathers anger before she flexes her vocals for the extended chorus, adding a touch of distortion and a singular, whining guitar note as needed. (Jillian Mapes also has a fantastic review of the record over on Pitchfork.) Torres will be at Barboza on Saturday, May 16.
• Rich Homie Quan keeps dropping stray tracks in the wake of his mixtape If You Ever Think I Will Stop Going In Ask Double R. On his latest, “Trap House”—a smooth ode to selling drugs and getting that money—he’s joined by jailed Migos member Offset. It’s beautiful out today, so blast this with the windows down.
• Moses Sumney might be more your taste if you’re looking to swing by the park and have a good long, contemplative look at the Olympics. Sumney sings in a slightly off-kilter vibrato, layering his voice with soft, ghostlike background vocals throughout. Around the one-minute mark, the sound stretches to cavernous volumes—a likely influence of producer Chris Taylor’s time with Grizzly Bear.
• Best Coast stopped by Conan to perform “Feeling Okay”—the newest single off their latest album, California Nights. Now, I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of Bethany Cosentino, but this is a nice little jam. Nothing inventive, but no surprises there. If nothing else, it’s a good reminder to hang in there when your life’s not looking exactly the way you thought it would. Keep on keeping on. The band will be making their way to Seattle next month to play the Showbox.
• Twin Shadow are still recovering from their horrific bus crash last month in Denver, but they made an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers yesterday evening. (George Lewis Jr.’s cast was on full display.) Later on in the show, they were joined by Zoë Kravitz and performed a stripped-down cover of Sade’s “Ordinary Love.” I’m leaving you with this song because the answer to the question “Should I include some Sade in my day?” is always “Yes, yes. Yes.”
