And the award for Best Band Name Ever (or at least of the week) goes
to… Koalacaust! I know, making light of the Holocaust is
generally frowned upon, but Koalacaust is just cute. And the band ain’t
bad, either. They come from California, they play delightfully sloppy
basement pop songs, and they often use an accordion.
If that sounds like a fine time to you, the cuddly/crass quintet are
playing a show at Squid & Ink in Georgetown this Saturday, August
8. Opening is local beardo Jason Clackley, a former Bremerton
resident who’s done time in bands like the Flex and Valley of
the Dinosaurs.
For his solo stuff, Clackley is a little less goofy than he’s been
in previous projectsโokay, a lot less goofy. Instead of
spastically dancing around to prerecorded beats on his iPod, he
soulfully wails songs from the heart (check out his song “Things
Can’t Compare” for a prime example).
The show starts promptly at 7:00 p.m. and admission is by donation
(which means you should pay what you can to help out the touring bands,
but if you’re broke they won’t send you away).
Some bonus advice: Get to Squid & Ink early and have some dinner
before the show. Squid & Ink has a great menu of vegetarian and
vegan items, including MOTHERFUCKING POUTINE (aka the best thing Canada
has ever given the world). Don’t worry about the extra calories from
the thick, crispy fries smothered with peppery gravy and topped with
melty, gooey cheese curdsโyou’ll burn it all off dancing
to Koalacaust.
