I'm finding some common ground with the mayor. I drive and I bike (as do many). We need billions spent on bicycle infrastructure in this country as they have done in Europe, not just a piddly watery soup Republican small amount as we've done. Recognizing that not everyone has an ability to ride a bike, we also need to pour billions into transit and road infrastructure. This would put people to work, which we need! We shouldn't get into a war on the roads. We are only trying to get from point A to point B. Also, everyone should become competent in Rules of the Road. And NO TEXTING, WEB SURFING OR CELLPHONE TALKING WHILE DRIVING! Learn to be in the present moment instead of being a modern day distracted multitasking American. Everyone's quality of life would improve if they lived in the moment.
The automobile is here to stay—for a good while, anyway. Bicyclists will be in the minority for an equally good while. And the US just won't invest in biking infrastructure, as Smell urges above: it's too conservative and sneers at Europe. But I don't disagree with Smell at all. The US should.
What I do wonder about is if there really is a war on between bicyclists and motorists. Sure, there are individuals out there on both sides who are, but in general?. I commute to work on my bike five days a week, about eleven and a half miles round trip. Except for a few—a few—jerks in cars, I find most motorists thoughtful and considerate towards me. Sometimes, in fact, Seattle Nice can be ridiculous and even dangerous, as with the driver who stopped on one way Roosevelt for me to cross, as if the other lane would read his mind and agree to his courtesy. I waved him on. That was not the only all too nice incident, and there will be more jerks too.
Sorry to be contrarian, but I see bicyclists ROUTINELY running red lights and cutting through stopped cars. This does nothing but increase tensions between motorists and cyclists, and I'd like to see them busted.
That Nazi bitch Grace Crunican left a cadre of assholes in SDOT to obstruct progress by any means. This war is her doing. Now she's set her sights on crippling San Francisco transit so her cohorts in the automobile industry there may likewise continue to profit from car-dependency. Burn in hell, Crunican.
I Rarely see motorists come to a full and complete stop at a stop sign. I often see motorists encroach dangerously into the bicyclist's lane of travel. The other day I saw some bitch eating from a cereal bowl while she drove to work, and don't get me started on the mobile devices. Should I then demonize all motorists?
If a bicyclist fucks up, the bicyclist gets hurt or dies.

The real problem here is that both bikers and drivers are human. And so many of them are assholes. Asshole drivers, asshole bikers. Ya see them everyday.
I just this morning almost added another one of these ghost bikes at the corner of Massachuttes and Rainier when some knucklehead ran the red light. Lucky for him I was paying attention.
You don't give a shit about safety... all you want is for people to stop driving carbon belching automobiles. Man up and start being honest! safety...... BULLSHIT
Hehe, thanks for being one of the rare honest people, gaia242 .... nice to see someone not covering their true intentions by dragging someone's suffering through the mud.
I drive and ride a bike just about an equal amount of time. While in a car, I consider myself biker friendly in terms of how I drive. That said, I think bicyclists have to do a better job of paying attention to the rules of the road. Many bicyclists think they can do whatever they want because they're less threatening and being environmentally conscious. This idea is ridiculous. Running red lights, weaving through stopped cars, etc. is as much a part of the problem then an asshole driver. Let's all work together people.
I find it interesting the media (or police?) doesn't release who is at fault in these collisions. The death is sad, of course, but it's not always the vehicle who was at fault!
McGinn's agenda is clear and his tactics are cynical. He's on a war against cars, and his "summits" will demand that motorists foot the bill for everything the cyclistas want. There'll be a little staged piety about cyclists needing to be better riders, but the real aim is to pick the pockets of the city's drivers.
Fortunately, the voters are clued in this time. Mayor McDope is less popular in Seattle than Barack Obama is in Eastern Oregon ranch country. He has done a superb job of organizing the drivers in the city. Just wait until November, when we stuff Prop. 1 into the shitcan where it belongs.
McGinn, instead of holding "summits," why not do us all a favor and resign?
They're a great idea!
