Milo Yiannopoulos walked into a bar in New York City yesterdayâa bar where the New York City chapter of the DSA just so happened to be meeting. Milo wanted to be famous and he is. He was recognized and the small crowd began chanting, "Nazi scum get out!" It was chanted from what appears to be a respectful distanceâmaybe they were worried about catching Nazi cootiesâand Milo and his lunch companion left the bar. They weren't chased out, they weren't pushed out, no one pursued them.
Milo posted this to Facebook about it...
I was just shoved and screamed at by a big group in a pub in Manhattan and forced out of the place. One of them was a reporter for Gizmodo. They were screaming at the top of their lungs about "Nazis" and "KKK." Initially I was going to stay put obviously but they blocked me from my table and my bag and yelled at me to leave and it was about to escalate into something ugly. It rattled me a little bit (just slightly!), perhaps because I have something to lose in life now. My first thought was John and not getting myself hurt or killed. I donât know how Iâd explain to my black husband that I got hurt for being a "white supremacist." I didnât have security with me so I had to just get out of there. I wonât name the place we were at because the staff were really understanding and cool about it. But jeez. Itâs now impossible for me to safely go out for lunch in most major cities in America because I supported Trump at the last election and donât like feminism.
Jeez.
If those people are screaming at "the top of their lungs," well, then everyone in that bar must have emphysema. And if there was shoving, no one caught it on cameraânot even Milo, who's often trailed by an acolyte whose job it is to film Milo's every move. And when Milo attempts to hide behind his black husband to claim he's not a Nazi or a White Supremacist, we can go to the video:
Milo Yiannopoulos has been filmed singing a patriotic song at a Dallas Karaoke bar while American white nationalists were allegedly in the audience giving the Nazi salute. The video, published by Buzzfeed News as a part of an investigation into Breitbart Newsâ ties to neo-Nazis and white nationalists, shows Mr Yiannopoulos singing âAmerica, the Beautifulâ at the One Nostalgia Tavern while crowd members give the salute. Among those in the crowd giving the salute was Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist in the US who was seen in a previously disclosed tape giving the Nazi salute while praising Donald Trump after his election last year.
The whole Buzzfeed report is worth reading if you missed it when it was publishedâgo read the whole thingâand it proves Milo wasn't some innocent Trump supporter (no such thing) who thought "feminist = fat" (hilarious). When Milo was still at Breitbart, he was merrily swapping emails with a staffer at "the neo-Nazi hub the Daily Stormer" asking if they wouldn't mind "braindumping some thoughts" for a "big feature" Milo was working on, a feature intended to define the alt-rightâsomething that couldn't be done, it seems, without input from neo-Nazis.
A gay man was stabbed to death by a member of a neo-Nazi terror cell in January. Yiannopoulos' efforts to normalize and mainstream white supremacy and the alt-right/neo-Nazi movement contributed to that young man's deathâthe alt-right movement Milo helped define and helped lead and our alt-right president have empowered young white male bigots at home and abroad.
But, hey, it's all fun and memes until neo-Nazis start murdering faggots, right? Or you get yelled at by a bunch of socialists in a bar. At that point you can run and hide behind your black husband and your mother's Jewish heritage, I suppose, but it won't protect you from the low opinion of decent people or the hatred of the indecent mob you helped assemble. Decent people see Milo for what he is. And the hateful/hate-fueled neo-Nazis Milo spent years playing footsie with aren't going to distinguish between gay men who supported Trump and gay men who didn't once the knives are out. History repeats itself, as someone or other once said, "first as tragedy, then as farce."
Speaking of the Daily Stormer: the Washington Post published a long piece over the weekend on the welcome "implosion" of the alt-right:
Eight months after a white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville ended in the death of a counterprotester, the loose collection of disaffected young white men known as the alt-right is in disarray.
The problems have been mounting: lawsuits and arrests, fundraising difficulties, tepid recruitment, widespread infighting, fierce counterprotests, and banishment from social media platforms. Taken together, theyâve exhausted even some of the staunchest members.
One of the movementâs biggest groups, the Traditionalist Worker Party, dissolved in March. Andrew Anglin, founder of the Daily Stormer, the largest alt-right website, has gone into hiding, chased by a harassment lawsuit. And Richard Spencer, the alt-rightâs most public figure, canceled a college speaking tour and was abandoned by his attorney last month.
Read the whole thingâyou'll be glad you did. You might also enjoy reading this piece from the Spectator: "The Fall of Milo Yiannopoulos:
Exhausting Adventures With a Fading Right-Wing Phenomenon."
But while the alt-right appear to be in disarray and Milo is definitely fading, the poisons they injected into our cultureâto say nothing of the poison they helped to instal in the Oval Officeâare still making us sick.
