A Q&A with City Attorney Erika Evans

1

I wish her success (it’s been a low bar since Holmes so I’ll be shocked if she isn’t successful)

2

We're cooked.

3

Wouldn't it be nice for hard-ass city attorney and DA going after petty crime and hard crime and cleaning up the city like Giuliani did for New York?

4

My problem with Evan’s and progressive attorneys in general is that 100% of their focus is on the offender. The people that are impacted by the crimes are told to just suck it up because the offender has addiction, mental issues, financial problems, etc., etc. etc. So the rest of us get to be victimized again and again and again by the same people while we wait around for them to decide to stop being assholes. Evans talks about a breaking point on drug use when they will do something different. I hope she’s serious about that because we know under Holmes it was just rinse and repeat with no accountability and no real progress when it came to many of the public safety issues that ended up defining his tenure.

@3 the Giuliani "broken windows" model has been discredited and most scholars attribute the 90s crime reductions (which were nationwide not just in NYC) to multiple other factors.

6

Nathalie says Davison left a "mess", but according to Westneat a week back, after peaks in 2023 homeless deaths were down 29% and drug overdose deaths were down 40%. The one year drops in 2025 were 42% for homicides, 34% for gun violence, and 23% for car thefts (after dropping 20% the year before). Hard to imagine how a rational adult looks at that and sees a "mess". Yet for some reason Davison was trounced by somebody apparently wanting to go back to the old ways of revolving door no accountability policies. We'll see how it goes, but acting like things were headed in the wrong direction under Davison is transparent idiocy.

7

@6 - very well stated.

8

@5: In my freshman year in college we were taught how and why this line of reasoning was fallacious:

9

I meant @6. Sorry.

10

@8, @9: As @6 noted, the Stranger has claimed Davison left “a mess.” The Stranger has the burden of supporting that statement. Reading the statistics @6, do you believe they support the Stranger’s claim, or do not support the Stranger’s claim?

11

@8 Your college taught you citing data is "fallacious"? You might want to ask them for a refund...

12

@6 "The one year drops in 2025 were 42% for homicides, 34% for gun violence, and 23% for car thefts"

None of which are prosecuted by the City Attorney's Office so these reductions are in no way whatsoever attributable to Davison. How do conservatives persistently not understand what CAO does?

13

@12: The City Attorney's Office does indeed prosecute misdemeanor car thefts. But that wasn't all then-City Attorney Davison did:

"Seattle City Attorney Ann Davidson filed a lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia. In this lawsuit, Davidson alleged that Hyundai’s and Kia’s failed to install anti-theft technology in some of their vehicles. Davidson’s allegation goes on to assert that the failures of these two car manufacturers to do so was a contributing factor in a very significant increase in the number of car thefts. A release from the city of Seattle states that car thefts involving Hyundai and Kia cars increased by a total of 503% for Hyundai cars and 363% for Kia cars.

"Davidson’s lawsuit makes the allegation that both Hyundai and Kia were aware of public safety risks resulting from increased theft of their vehicles and that neither Hyundai nor Kia took meaningful action to address this issue. According to an insurance group statement in September, these Kia and Hyundai cars are stolen almost twice as often as most other cars because their keys do not have computer chips used in theft ‘immobilizer’ systems. Instructional videos shared on social media spread this information to more people. Simply put, the lack of these computer chips makes it much easier to steal these Hyundai and Kia cars."

@13 "misdemeanor car thefts"

Ya that and misdemeanor rapes and misdemeanor murders

15

@14: Automobile theft can certainly be a misdemeanor in Washington state:

"If the vehicle’s value is less than $750, the charge may be reduced to a gross misdemeanor, resulting in a maximum of 364 days in jail and/or fines up to $5,000."

OK, so you don't know about misdemeanor sexual crime in Washington state, either. Here, have another attorney explain that to you:

"Sexual misconduct with a minor in the second degree involves sexual contact with someone under 18 years old, but 16 years old or older. The offender is at least 60 months older than the victim and in a position of authority over the victim (i.e., employer, teacher, coach, etc.).

"The charge is a gross misdemeanor punished by up to one year in jail. Sexual contact is touching any sexual or other intimate parts for sexual gratification."

And we know sexual misdemeanors have been prosecuted in Seattle Municipal Court, because the Stranger complained (!) that a man was sentenced to 180 days in jail on a sexual misdemeanor charge against a teenager. (https://www.thestranger.com/elections-2022/2022/09/22/78516309/defense-attorneys-say-harsh-sentencing-decision-reveals-judges-bias)

So, I think it's safe to say your criticism of City Attorney Davison's performance comes from your having absolutely no idea even what she was supposed to be doing in that office.

16

@15 you really went to all that effort just to further embarrass yourself
